Im sick to death of paying more annual insurance for my van than my TVRranting . I know they look at my occupation and probably dont belive me when i say its for private use.But i spent half my year in the north sea and i will be damned if im working also when im home !. I have full no claims to use on it also.
Any recommendations please !. thumbup

Same with me. I used my van for moving my downhill bikes about as they're too heavy for a rack. I don't use a van for anything other than that and my occupation would show the insurers that too however the van was far more expensive to insure than anything else I have, so much so I've had to get rid. Unfortunately, stats show idiots drive vans and out insurance is higher as a result.

Insurance pricing is all to do with stats - how much did the insurer pay out on average for a particular risk last year tells them how they need to price it this year, and each insurer will arrive at a different figure based on the portfolio of customers they had last year.

If you asked an insurer what their claims experience is like for 35yr old builders in Manchester driving a Ford Transit for work they'll have quite a bit of data to look at, in comparison if you asked them about your risk profile they're unlikely to have any data to base their pricing on so will go on the side of caution, especially as the vast majority of the market lost money last year.

Co op insurance used to be very good with a private policy for vans. i'm not sure if their stance has changed but worth a go at least. When I worked there i used to do loads of SD&P only pols and good prices (this was 7 years ago though)

+1 for Co-Op...I recently sold my Merc 609D but that was insured on a private van policy with Co-op for very little money...It also made no difference what van it was (I previously had an LDV 400)

I have a van for bikes and towing my race car, insured far cheaper than my cars.

Insured through gladiator as private use and I was even able to use my NCD from my cars against it.

Even includes tool/contents insurance.

I used one of the comparison websites.

I have looked at private van insurance as well and was also shocked. Vauxhall Vivaro was coming back at close to £3K using those comparison websites, the majority of the quotes were £10K and above though. Going directly to Aviva was £600ish. I got the Aviva and Direct Line (£900ish) recommendations from a co-worker that drives a van.

For reference I pay £550 fully comp for a 2.0 Honda Accord. I am beginning to reconsider getting a van due to the insurance quotes. Aviva was acceptable, but that is just one company and they may well realize soon enough how much more the competition is charging.

David Auden insurance. My Vivaro is insured a rally sevice barge because I tow my rally car with it - private use only.
There are other specialists about such as competition car insurance and richard egger insurance. Worth trying these 3 first before you go to the mainsteam ones.

Hope this helps

Be careful it you require third party cover on other vehicles with your van policy, it's almost impossible to get with a van any more.

I too have a van as my daily as I need it for lugging my mtb bikes around in (it also greatly reduces house moving costs!), but I do have to use it for work.

It always seems like an uphill battle trying to explain to the insurers that I'm not a business and that I just use it as my main transport! Despite my policy going up by 30% this year (reflection on the market), I'm still only paying £400- for reference that's for an '01 Expert HDI 7k PA, I'm 27 with 6y ncb with a clean sheet.

It seems even a fairly sterile hatchback would cost me that to insure. I bought my policy through Gocompare, but I forget the name of the broker...

Phone around first though and explain your situation, have fun tongue out
