RE: Pic Of The Week: E-Type And Lightning
Discussion
Fabulous. Reminds me of the runway race between an Aston Martin Nimrod racer and an RAF Nimrod along the runway at St Mawgan in the early 80s. One of the big magazines of the time did a spread about it. Does anyone else remember this and what mag it was as I would like to read it again.

Two of my favourites!! I've seen that particular Lightning run many a time. If you've never been to Bruntingthorpe to a Cold War Jets day, make sure you do before it gets too expensive to run these sort of things (or they run out of spares)
An easy 10!! and come on own up... who rated it less than 10!!!
wow, thanks for the info, I've always wanted to hear a lightning run, I thought they weren't flying them anymore at all!An easy 10!! and come on own up... who rated it less than 10!!!
Past fav engine sounds at air shows were the cold war jets, sukhoi fitter being a fav
oh nice pic too btw, may have to shop the gurner out when I get back to work

They dont fly any aircraft (well apart from the Victor )Past fav engine sounds at air shows were the cold war jets, sukhoi fitter being a fav

They perform a high speed taxi, full re-heat up to take off speed. Not just the lightning that runs, you'll see Buccaneers, Hunters, Victor, Comet, Nimrod amongst others.
Here are a couple of photo's to whet your appetite...

Well done Adam, great stuff
Cheers mate, it was a great story to research and write.Just to confirm, it's a genuine tracking shot! I think the owner of the E-type was very brave to drive his P&J that close to the plane for the photos, one of which you see here.
Also, someone mentioned the airbrakes being out, but it was shot after the plane had completed an afterburner run down the runway. After the parachute was disconnected, the pilot taxied it back down the Brunters runway to the hangar, and that's when we took the photos - as pre-arranged with him. We did rear tracking first, and then as I was driving the photographer's estate car I had the bizarre experience of overtaking a Lightning at 80mph to get in front of him for the fronts. Even with ear plugs, with the Avons only idling and the wind noise, it was still deafeningly loud inside the car...
This photo was taken with about 10 seconds of runway left... no second chances...

Very cool pic, driver not withstanding. Lightning is one of two planes I've not seen flying and really wish I had (other is F14) - beautiful machines!
Brunters...just found the website, but just missed the last open day, and can't find the next...will keep eyes open.
350 - nice photos, esp. the sunset one - really nice capture.

nice pic but looks pretty photoshopped for me.. which is weird as that sort of thing rarely catches my attention! but it looks a rainy day, and the car (apart from the windscreen) has an autoglym finish? how come the water only hits the windscreen? reminded me of that burt bacharach song 'raindrops keep falling on my head'.

I saw on of the last Lightenings fly at virtually zero feet, length of the runway before standing on it's tail and climbing vertically till it disappeared.
It was out of service by then and was a BAe jet.
The fact that it was a pure fluke (happened to be walking past) made it all the more impressive.........
