The whole reason the que is so bad, is because of censored like the guy in the BMW who barge down the empty 'closed' lane only to force their way in and hold everyone else up who has had the sense and respect for other drivers to filter into the open lanes in good time!! rage

Who the hell do these people think they are? Good job most drivers don't have their selfish attitude or the we would be in a right mess!
This actually doesn't make any sense at all.

For the same number of vehicles, a two lane queue is longer than a 3-lane queue, and if that pushes the queue back across a junction, it spreads the queuing love out into the local road network.

So BMW-man is actually doing the right thing.

I fking hate amateur traffic police on the motorway.

Drive up to the closure and then merge in turn, like grown-ups, is what people should do.
Exactly Commander.

I had this issue when the Brynglas Tunnels in Newport were shut recently.

Some tt in a HGV was blocking straddling lane 2 and 3 1500 YARDS before lane 3 ended.

I honestly can not understand why anyone thinks it is a good idea not to use an empty lane of a motorway?

I will always drive near to the end of an obstruction and merge in turn a safe distance before the lane ends. Unless of course you get some self righteous prick that will match your speed and stop you from doing so.

Why do people feel so hard done by when someone goes past them? Why not use your brains and use the empty lane your self? A 3 lane queue is shorter than a 2 lane one, you must feel so proud of yourselves when you realise that all you are doing is causing tailbacks and blocking junctions further down the road, really well done!

Do you all stand in the supermarket blocking tills with your trolley just incase someone gets served before you?

You are not the Police, thankfully

Uh, pillocks.
No, that's the plural. A collective noun is, for example, a gaggle of geese.

Exactly. There's a road which leads away from Cribbs Causeway in Bristol which is terrible for this type of driving.
2 lanes become 1, but everyone is content to sit in lane 1 while lane 2 stands empty. Apparently zip-merging is the work of the devil, in the West Country.

Is it a pollick of pillocks?* Also, I thought a gaggle described more than two geese.**

* I may very well of just made that up.
** I may very well be absolutely wrong.

I've noticed a new one recently.

When approaching the end of a DC in L2 that's fairly empty, a car ahead of me in L1 will move across to the right as the merge approaches. Generally when it's obvious that I'm not intending to try and pass them before the merge.

I even saw someone indicate right before doing this.

Why are some drivers so obsessed about overtaking?

So why do they put up the signs, lane closed in 800, 600, 400, 200 yards? Is this for people to ignore and flog on until they run out of lane? Or is it a bit of a clue??? ie. 'you might want to think about moving out of this lane now as it will shortly be comming to an end'!!

I pitty your self importance......banghead
Unfortunatley you are wrong about this! Which is why you see signs such as "merge in turn" and "Use all lanes when queing"

However it works out well for us lot that know the highway code as we can perfectly legally and safely drive pasts hundreds of meters of people who dont understand the rules of the road hehe

With the shogun guy to be quite honest if I was on my own I would be quite tempted to see if he would really run into me (as long as I had something along the lines of a roadhawk). Let the police charge him for dangerous driving and causing an accident.

I can understand the mondeo drivers annoyance, but the best thing to do in these cases is to stick like glue to the bumper of the car infront and point blank refuse to let the selfish knobs in. Of course, theres always some clueless person who has no idea, road sense or dignity, who lets the offenders 'bully' their way in.

Then theres the censored's who take to the hard shoulder instead of queing?!! I love it when u see them half a mile up the road being invited into the back of a traffic car!! judge
In bold, that's you.

Why queue for longer than necessary and not use all the available road.
Enjoy your wait in lane two, I'll be going up lane 3 until it closes.

I agree with you in regards to driving in the hard shoulder though.

This thread has confused the he'll out of me, I'm amazed at the overwhelming response from people being that driving all the way up to the cones is the right thing to do, I confess this annoys the he'll out of me especially when in a near stationery queue, but having read this I can now kind of see the sense in doing it, fortunately I don't have a need to use motorways and even less rarely in rush hour but what I do next time now I have no idea, out of sheer panic and confusion I'll probably end up doing what mundano man did LOL!!

Interesting read smile

Irritating is the people who as soon as they see the lane closure signs, immediately slam on then indicate and gradually nudge in to the other lane, forcing the other lane to stop to let them in and causing a queue in the closing lane.

Doesn't make a difference if the closure is 200 yards or a mile away, they just stop as soon as they see the slow moving traffic.

Was the lane actually closed due to the accident, i.e. a Red X on an overhead gantry? If so the dick in the BMW shouldn't be in that lane, the dick in the Mondeo isn't helping the situation though but I can see why he's done it, but if it's a Red X you shouldn't be in that lane after the sign.

Are you suggesting a gaggle of geese isn't an example of a collective noun?

It is. "Geese" being the plural bit - of goose, obviously.

One person thinks its 'wrong', everyone else sees no issue with it. The highway code has no issue with it. Common sense states that its the best things to do.

Go figure!

What it all boils down to is this ridiculous view that drivers seem to have that they in some way 'own' the piece of tarmac in front of them and its their decision to 'allow' people to use it.

Absurd.

Accident in the M1 yesterday. Outside overtaking lane closed. Man in the mondeo pulls out and straddles both lanes. Smart aleck in BMW who was screaming down the now empty lane brakes behind him.

A lovely example of modern motorway driving in the British Isles.
glad to see OP being "safe and observant" by taking a picture.....banghead
