The cost of overheads in ringing stolen MkI Escorts seem to be increasing.

Whilst this thread is a good idea in principle, if I were a criminal ringer I'd just keep a close eye on it and make sure to contact sellers before the ads posted here are taken down. It's like a live catalogue, saving them all the hassle of searching for them themselves!

That's a fair point but while the majority of the people who look and contribute to this thread are honest and law abiding there are a minority of criminally motivated people out there. So as well as reporting such listings to eBay if the number plates are available a few of us take screen grabs before the listings end and either pass them on to...

https://navcis.police.uk/

...or if it is local enough or we happen to know anyone local who would be interested pass the details, screen grab and link to the sellers eBay profile to friendly Police officers.

I totally understand why you (plural) are reporting ones you find to the police and to eBay... thats the right thing to do.

What I don't understand, is why you (plural) post them on here. The only thing I can conclude is that its to "boast" your findings / detective abilities. This doesn't help eliminate the problem, it just gives criminals a useful bookmark in their browser.

Because it takes more than one report to get some listings removed. This is the biggest motoring forum in the UK and more than half the people who see this thread follow up by reporting the items. Some have sent messages to sellers telling them what they are doing is wrong and potentially illegal and others have named and shamed them on other forums and owners clubs as well as reporting items to eBay/NaVICS/etc. I've spoken to people who aren't on Pistonheads or are and have never commented or posted on this thread but report listings we post links to...

While I'm on the topic I'd like to thank everyone who has contributed, commented and reported these listings over the years and are looking out for similar ones.

If you stop the sale of a ringing kit today you have saved someone from loosing their car (pride and joy/family member) tomorrow.

...if any criminals are reading this thread looking for a hot ticket good luck, as soon as the number plates are reported they are put on the Police, DVLA and insurance databases; so getting and using the ringing kit will end as soon as you pass an ANPR camera or someone interested in buying gets an insurance quote or applies for VED (road tax).

I didn't consider the "power in numbers" side of this, makes much more sense now! I imagine Gumtree must be used for this sort of stuff also, much less regulation than eBay etc

Gumtree are a lot more aware of UK Law and the definition of "Accessories after the fact". Following a few heavy fraud and date rape convictions they tightened up their website and ditched the dating side of it completely.

Seems extremely close to just providing a VIN and V5C.

Dread to think. If you were doing up a Moggie I could see the use in that though (especially as it appears to have gone for £95. I imagine it's worth more as bits.

Is the scam, buy this kit, steal identical car, swap vin plates and reg plates, presto, you have a 'clean' car to sell on?
