Will post logbook but seems collection of chassis by purchaser may be optional!

there is no engine number recorded on the V5 which is very handy as you will not have to keep changing it every time you change your engine for a different one
Just as well it's tax exempt, with no engine number, they'd be no capacity so you could only fit an electric motor in theory. wink

Another distinctly questionable sale. No sign of the actual vehlcle or any parts thereof. EBay should outlaw these.

Ford Escort MK1 & MK2 RS2000 rep Reg: WJJ 342M stolen 30/03/'16 in Faversham, Kent, Kent Police area.
The car has dark blue RS2000 graphics & is powered by a Zetec fitted with Jenvey throttle bodies & a BDA style rocker cover. It has a Fostek axle & is 5 linked. The car is fitted with a roll cage & bucket seats. It’s got Minilight wheels, round door mirrors, an external fire extinguisher & battery kill switch on the scuttle below the windscreen which will stand out. It is also fitted with bonnet pins & lifters on the hinges as can be seen in the picture.
The car is on SORN & doesn’t have a current MOT

How the hell would you ring that? It would quickly be identified. Ringing a red 2013 Astra where the car would literally vanish into the crowd yes, but a rare Escort?

Any time a chassis can be posted would ring a few alarm bells with me!

Don't waste you time. They wont allow common sense, or knowledge of the subject, to dampen their ardour...

Exactly, that car is in a million bits and those bits are being sold on ebay, gumtree and every car forum and classic car event under the sun, what the warriors on this thread do has no impact on these thieves one iota but it keeps them off the streets I guess.

At least we are doing something. Even if it's a drop in the ocean. As for the Escort it's a common paint scheme, replicated several times I'm sure it would be as easy to ring as any car like it.

Here's a question for those more knowledgeable than I.

I'm looking at the idea of buying an engine to replace the one in my car (yes, authorities and insurance will be legitimately notified of any changes)

The engine in question is a Vauxhall Z20LEH (mk5 Astra VXR engine) to replace the Z20LER in my Astra SRi 2.0 Turbo.

What's the best way to make sure that an engine you look at isn't from something stolen and broken for parts? Is there a foolproof way?
Morally and in terms of problems later I don't want to do anything wrong. I'll probably end up just doing stuff to the engine that's in there but the Z20LEH has some desirable stuff on it and an engine swap is easier than adding it to mine so I want to look at all options.

All you can do, beyond buying the vendor, is look at the engine number. Its rare to see one replaced that looks original. I suspect that The Man is far less interested in the engines provenance than you are, though.

Ask to see the log book for the donor vehicle and cross reference the engine numbers from the unit and paperwork. No log book no sale. Most commercial breakers will keep a photocopy of the V5C in case anyone asks. With the V5C you'll know the reg' so you can go so far as to do an HPi, DVLA database or even a simple Google check to make sure there are no markers on it.

With social media pages dedicated to helping people who have had their vehicles taken ("They Stole My Wheels" on Facebook for example) more and more stolen vehicle number plates come up on Google searches.

A good example of the problem here. It is easy sitting at your desk and knowing about everything, but in practice few legitimate engines are sold by people who have the V5C.

This is what I referred to as buying the vendor - if you don't trust him then don't buy it and if he is credible, then buy away.

Some I agree with posting. Many are ridiculous. Some of these are posted by the eager but unworldly, and others by people who should know better, if they knew as much as they think that they do...

I have never and would never buy an engine without seeing the V5C from the donor first. I have bought engines for projects from back yards to businesses and have walked away from just as many without documentation.

Not sat at a desk in the real world. rolleyes
