That's a risk but it would also be self-incriminating. By reporting me he would also be reporting himself for the sale of the ringing kit. As I haven't nor have I ever stolen a vehicle the only evidence would be the items he has for sale.

"This is a "TRIUMPH SPECIAL" the on;ly one in UK. Built in 1961 by a professional engineer/blacksmith to the exact plans of the Vale 1937 Le Mans racer."

its registered as 1961 Triumph (Herald i guess)
it has a Ford crossflow engine & ford gearbox fitted
the car is designwise not even near the Vale car
it looks more like a Burlington.
the chassis is definately NOT a triumph herald chassis

337 WPA
? Untaxed

Tax due:
21 August 2017
Incorrect tax status?
? MOT

Expires:
13 June 2018

Vehicle make: TRIUMPH
Date of first registration: October 1961
Year of manufacture: 1961
Cylinder capacity (cc): 1147 cc
CO?Emissions: Not available
Fuel type: PETROL
Export marker: No
Vehicle status: Not taxed
Vehicle colour: BLUE
Vehicle type approval: Not available
Wheelplan: 2-AXLE-RIGID BODY
That seems to qualify as a VHI (Vehicle of Historic Interest) under the new rules applicable from May 20th 2018. It was built over forty years ago so ticks all boxes and will not need an MOT in the future.

hehe

It was a risk I had considered.

Apparently the number plate was originally on a two door car so it could be a pre-ringered ringing kit.

No reply as yet. scratchchin

One stolen car...

...one ringing kit from eBay.

One serious bloody problem we need to do something about.

Looks like it has a Vitesse engine while being registered as a 13/60, but are those not based on a Herald chassis and running gear, so ok to retain the identity of the donor?

It has been brought to my attention that the Mini featured in a recent episode of "Salvage Hunters Classic Cars" was a MkIV Mini shell with the identity from a MkII Mini Cooper ringed to it. Obviously it should have been re-shelled with a genuine MkII Heritage one to retain the 1968 identity but it's just another overly contrived tragic of television take it with a ton of salt car show that dilutes the industry and...

...I can't even be bothered to come up with an analogy.

Thank you to everyone who sent messages making me aware of this. Without breaching the forum naming and shaming policy the company who bought the ringer have been featured on this thread several times for selling ringing kits themselves "quelle surprise".

We all know it's wrong. They know it's wrong. I hope someone VOSA/DVLA will be at the Mini show where the ringer from the TV show will no doubt take centre stage.

Out of interest, we're the original car or shell stolen?

Good question but in this instance the legitimacy of the shell doesn't really matter. Using the identity from an older vehicle to elevate the value of a newer one at the point of sale is fraud.

MkIV Mini 998cc is worth between £1,500 - £3,500
A genuine MkII Mini Cooper would be worth £8,000 - £15,000

Depending on condition, history, time of the year and other factors.

It's not only about stolen vehicles it's about criminals using identities to break the law.

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/204247

Figures based on true market values. I have been told how much the Mini in show was sold for but again take that with a Ton of salt.

OTOH

They have an old, valuable car which is beyond restoration and used a new shell to repair it.

Inadvertently they have actually devalued the original.

As long as there is full disclosure to a new buyer, I have far less of a problem with this than people who sell scrap with a V5 and VIN plate.

To retain the identity it has to be a like for like replacement Heritage shell and all parts from the donor transferred over to the new shell. From what I have been told it wasn't even the genuine Cooper engine.

No Mini is beyond repair as every single panel and part is readily available.

All someone has done here is been too tight to buy a new shell or pay someone to repair the original one and ringed the identity on to a far, far; far cheaper 1980's car.

Criminal intent or not the law has still been broken.

Sorry for the owner - hope he's not charged with having illegal number plates if they find it!

Even if the car is found, I doubt the number plates will be with it!

This guy...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-106-gti-log-boo...

...has loads of ringing kits for sale.

So I have sent a message about the 106 GTi one.

eBay message said:
My mate has just had his 106 GTi stolen. If someone buys this to use as a ringing kit can you let me know?

That will make you an accessory to the theft "after the fact" but that would be the case if you sold it to anyone anyway.

I can pass on your details to the Police and they can trace the buyer of your ringing kit and with any luck get my mates car back.

All the best.
