I may be reading it wrongly, but it seems like the guy knowingly bought just a V5 and is now complaining that he’s been screwed?

I'd be most grateful of a share if you reckon it could be of help!
Anyone who says "It's just a car" is wrong. This woman has lost a member of her family.

This is why we have got to put a stop to this...

how is it possible to retain a 1989 reg-date with such a car?

dvla says:
Date of first registration: August 1989
Year of manufacture: 1989

I don't get this thread

The title appears to be claiming a desire to stamp out the practice, but here we are 8 years later and not only is it still rife we seem to be promoting it by publishing links to the items for sale....

DVLA seem to make up some of the 'rules' at will. It looks to be correctly registered (and not a Ford Sierra or similar) - Mostly if the majority of the parts come from a known donor, then the registration make will be an age-related one (but not from the original donor), so in this case a G prefix. DVLA will AIUI give the date of first registration as either that of the donor (in this case 1989), or date when it had its SVA/IVA test (so maybe 2009 in this case).
I SVA'd a Quantum (built from 1986 XR2) in 2009, and it has an age-related plate but a build date of 2009. All very confusing, but common practice.

yep, i´´ m aware of that.

but i was not aware that age-related plates do show both dates (reg. and manufacture date) as the same "old" date? this must be a mistake from DVLA....

shouldnt at least one of the dates be a newer one, in this case minimum 2009?

as it passed SVA the reg. / v5c was not taken from a scrapped ginetta and used for this car.

looks a bit strange to me

If you're aware how DVLA 'work' you'll also know they never make mistakes wink

Here's a victim.

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/71778874...

1976-81 MGB with a 74 spec' grille and chrome bumpers. But it has the identity from a 1972 Harvest Gold car.

A chrome bumper converted 76-81 pageant blue MGB in that kind of condition would be worth £3,000+ any day of the week.

A pageant blue resprayed chrome bumper MGB in that condition £4,000+

That ringer? Worthless. rolleyes

IMO that car is more (60%?) a re-bodied spitfire , plus Fairthorpe paperwork and some remainings of the Fairthorpe Chassis

also strange that the sellers does not show the number-plate...wheras on most other adverts the plates are visible....warning bells start ringing

Depends on the car and make. I've seen five figure sums change hands.

Another rubber bumper ringer. frown

Wrong engine, wrong gear selector, wrong radiator location, single not twin batteries, wrong badges, wrong trim, wrong dash and welded over rubber bumper mounts.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MGB-GT-1-8-FOR-RESTORAT...

This was obvioulsy done quite some time ago so...

eBay message said:
Good evening.

Sorry to tell you this but your car is not a 1971 MGB. There are several items that were not added to the model until 1974

What you have is a later model that has been converted from rubber to chrome bumpers and an older model identity ringed onto it.

This was common practice with lazy restorers who couldn't or wouldn't weld, unscrupulous owners who wanted to make their own cars tax exempt, traders who wanted to make cars appear older to increase the value and most depressingly to hide the identity of a stolen car.

The Police, VOSA and the DVLA are cracking down on this so if you have bought the car believing it to be a true 1971 model then I am afraid you have been mislead and are an innocent victim of a fraudster or thief.

Continuing the listing in entirely up to you but it has been recorded for future reference.

All the best and sorry to bring you bad news again LK
...benefit of the doubt the seller could have unknowingly bought a ringer.

Several years ago there was a guy at a kit car show with a 'for sale' sign on a car which he claimed was a genuine frogeye sprite. A nice car with a GRP body from a manufacturer on the Isle of Wight, but not genuine frogeye. A few of us questioned him and he was adamant that it was genuine and I got the impression he knew it wasn't. As the day went on he looked a bit tense and moved on as so many were asking the same question! I just hope it went to someone who knew what it was and paid the correct price.

Hi LK

I have had the car checked out today & all the numbers every thing seem to mach. Thank you for your concern but may be you had to much pot.... i reaaly dont know...

Seller
My reply...

"Because the numbers have been changed. They won't come up on a check.

Your car is not an original chrome bumper MGB.

eBay seller said:
Thanks I will take it down to the police station in the morning

& let them know I bought the car from your self

I’m sure we bought the car from your ? Did we not

Seller
Hmmm that escalated unexpectedly eh? rolleyes

My reply?

"By all means. I'm sure wasting Police time is no longer an offense.

Once that's out of the way I'll print this conversation out and read it in any court you like as a defamation of character.
You have already implied I take drugs and now are suggesting you bought a ringer from me via carandclassic. I'm sure the website would be interested to know their name has been dragged into your gutter as well.

All the best".

Trying to make a positive from this situation I thought I would do a guide to help stop people buying a Rubber Bumper Ringer.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

If any MGB or MGB GT owners would like to help I would appreciate it a lot. Thank you. smile
