So, not a current one, but a historical one here with a twist - a factory sanctioned, publically admitted ringer!

Obviously standards were rather more relaxed in 1983 when this article was published.....

I don't really have a problem with that, as they weren't stealing a car to put the identity on.

Same with building up an old Landie on a brand new chassis, or a Mini from a brand new bodyshell, and then using the ID of a long dead car to go on it.

As long as you're not using stolen bits or a stolen ID, it's fundamentally harmless.

The issue is that the same things that let you do that let people launder a stolen car or parts.

In the 80's the VIN plate was often under the bonnet and held on by a couple of pop rivets biggrin

What a mismatched mess that is. Registered as a 61 Consul . These had the 1703 cc 4 pot which preceded the pre crossflow in the soon to be released Mk1 Cortina.
Registered with dvla as being 1300cc but fitted with the 1600 crossflow unit...

Looks like someone didn’t have insurance on a nearly new car.

Steel an identical car. Swap the numbers across, then flog good bits off the wreck as well.

Hmm. Selling for a friend who doesn't have Insurance? A fully functional right hip any more? Who Knows
Car still drives..... but maybe not in a straight line? biggrin

Surely nobody would have a legitimate use for this wreck.

If the driver was drunk, or the car was being used in a criminal act (i.e. running from a 'deal' and crashed), the insurance may be within the terms of the policy to only pay out to the 3rd party. Alternatively, it may have been 'fronted' by a young driver in a relative's name. frown

I wouldn't assume it wasn't insured. Lots of cars are written off and the insurance company fail to record it correctly.

Vcheck picks up on loads slipping through the net. I suspect that is true for this car.

Very common for the era, period correct even, and that a significant minority still exist. I believe their was an amnesty for getting the paperwork right, but that this has passed and correcting it is now harder. Or just carry on camping.

It was a 72 plate BMW M340i in grey. The car had a serious impact on the driver's side. Looked like a tree or lamppost and the car was bent and roof caved badly. I would be surprised if the driver wasn't seriously injured or killed.

I suspect the seller has got scared with the attention of the same. The truth will come out about the background of the car.

All of those scenarios scream self inflicted rather than sad.

The current Fiat 500 actually has the VIN number on the underside of the (obviously bolted on) bonnet..rotate

Presumably not the only one. But that does appear a particular odd location.

From memory.
Right front door sill under the sill plate, drivers side door pillar (stick on label), under the left side of the windscreen and in the boot as well (pop riveted plate) and of course hard wired in the ECU.
