This is a grey area as frames with UK registration documents are used to replace broken and import frames. Saves a whole £40 for a VIC check, £25 for a log book and £10.99 for a numberplate. Iffy but not illegal.

rolleyes

When I'm president of the democratic banana republic of Jay-rule salem I will make it illegal and punishable with death by potato. In the mean time however there's not a lot we can do.

If someone can get an address, I could pop round with a box of matches to deal with the V5.
The car has been scrapped, without a certificate of destruction and the log book has been kept. So the Continuous Registration Department of the DVLA (See "DVLA vs Liquid Knight") will be on to it shortly (if they haven't been tipped off already). As it's the old type of log book and the car's been scrapped it's safe to say the car isn't tested and you need an M.O.T for a retention certificate the only way that number can be put onto something is ringing.

A 1988 Mini could be worth up to £3,000 for a 998cc and nearly double that for a Cooper carb' and Minis are easy to steal and have had the same basic design for fifty odd years so any Mini from any period could get rung with this kit. Lock up your pride and joy if you own one.

If this item is used on a stolen vehicle both the seller and eBay are liable as accessories to theft

So I guess ebay's listing policy must include, we'll only remove it if enough people report it, no matter how legal it is or isn't in the first place.
Probably. The Mini ringing kit is still up even though it's been reported at least a dozen time both here and the Mini OC forums. rolleyes

Sadly both of those shells qualify as "restoration projects" and as we have already discussed you can make a whole Mini from parts. It's the "we will dispose of the shell/chassis for you" add's that are further towards the iffy side. As they would have to be sent to a scrap yard that will accept the remains of a vehicle with no identity abd not issue a certificate of destruction. A lot of those types of listing are people who either work for the yard or have a back hander deal going on.

Hmmmm, "see other items"?

Looking at the seat wear and the general state of that Corsa 261,000 miles are more likely, either that or the car has been driven by a twenty stone nudist in a war zone.

So what is exactly wrong with this then?
What do you mean?
Are you saying this is an illegal sale?
The seller is offering vin plates and a log book,

listing said:
Could be used with an Elf/Hornet or normal mini shell for a rebuild if so desired.
In other words "could be used to change the identity of another Elf or Mini".

listing said:
The documents are for historic interest only if bought without the shell, engine etc.
So the shell has been scrapped and not declared to the DVLA.

Yes, I see your point. Not much help in a restoration really if there is no semblence of the original vehicle.
His other listing he's "aledgedly" selling his Mums Corsa because it's too big for her and she wants a Mini. Wouldn't be poetic justice if his mums Mini gets stolen and they use his vin plates and log book to ring it? cop

Either the Ringing kit got lifted by eBay or you sore sense and removed it yourself. PistonHeads is an open forum and there are two sides to every story. So if you would like to comment on the thread as to why you thought it was okay to sell vehicles identity you are more than welcome.
I'm thinking of forwarding details via this link from now on as well.

HOw on earth can a Corsa be too big for someone?
04 Corsa's about the same size as a Mk3 Escort. So it can get a bit roomy in there.

Invited both to comment on here as to why they think it's okay to sell ringing kits. If the don't and I get a reply to the message I'll post it here.

Got the SP&L guys on the case as well now (hopefully). Until the identities are used on a stolen vehicle legally there isn't a lot the Police can do but the DVLA are more then happy to issue £40-£80 fines for log books that are lost in the post let alone kept deliberately so they can be sold on.

Here's an email address thanks to DefCon5 on the SP&L thread.

vehiclefraud@avcis.pnn.police.uk

If we forward the eBay listing details to these guys when we post them here (copy and paste the whole page in case eBay remove the listing before they get chance to see it) hopefully the long arm can reach these muppets. cop
