...well it's the first I've heard of it anyway.

Cutting out the catalytic converters from parked cars, in order to "recover" the metals inside. A mechanic friend tells me that he's seen a few of these lately. will earn around £100 per cat apparently.

Just to rub salt into the wounds, on the cars he's seen the s haven't exactly done a neat job either, leaving sensors, wiring looms and other bits and pieces damaged. Some customers have also had to pay a surcharge because an old unit isn't available to exchange for the new one they've had to purchase.

Anyone else heard of this/come across this?

I heard it on the radio, no real life examples as of yet. I'm actually suprised it hasn't happened before now!

Would have thought it was the kind of thing that was best not to advertise. There's not a lot anyone can do to alter fate. Is there?

No swear filter at all in titles (until the mods spot it).

Must be a pretty popular pastime now, there was a very similar thread on Saturday.

Mate's dad runs a small delivery company, with circa 15 vans. s broke into the yard one night and managed all bar 1 or 2 of them. Police weren't tripping over themselves to help frown

Maybe by 2050, the government will have worked out a way of ensuring that the buyers get imprisoned or fined if they happily buy 500 sawn off cats or 50m of signalling cable from someone who doesn't look like they work in a service centre or for a train company... or in fact works and pays taxes. irked

Latest? It's been happening in Potters bar for years! I think the first time I encountered it was 2008...

No I meant I have no money. Cant afford a hacksaw either so even if I would do something like that I cant!

I heard of this a few times. Some say 4x4s etc are fairly easy target - exhaust clearance high off the ground.

Loads of it been going on round here, unit next door had a huge one unbolted from a brand new lorry that they were fitting an air con unit, cost thousands to replace.

News linky for Surrey catalytic thefts - one link is for 50 cats taken in one night - wkers.
