Now my brother is learning to drive, he has bought a car. It is a 1.0 1990 Nissan Micra with 48000 miles on the clock. Surprisingly fun to drive, pretty slow but nippy. Terrible handling.

But all for £425. No motorways, mostly B roads; does anybody want to guess the average MPG we're getting out of it?

It's lightweight and low powered. What is hard to understand?

It's old, it's crap, there's better cars out there for £425. I reckon it gets 28mpg.

Nippy means quick and nimble, not lightweight and low powered - tis true.

When I was younger my ex-girlfriend had one of these. Not as slow as my Fiesta of the time (mark 3 1.0 litre) but their handling was much worse and it had heavy (even for unassisted) steering. MPG wise, we never really thought about it at the time but can't have been terrible. To be fair, there probably are some nicer cars to own, even for that sort of money.

Last time I calculated, it came out as 54mpg. I could not believe it. It's been on average around 50mpg which is much more than I expected.

Nice 100SX. However for pure economy and learning in, the Micra is more effective.

The wife has a 1999 K11 1.3 (16v) and loves it.
Had it 5 years now, getting on for 65k and never missed a beat. I've just rust proofed the lower front crossmember (was a bit flaky) on it but that's the only thing I've done it apart from tyres and brakes.
Not had one single advisory at MOT time too - fabulous little car really.

Anything is preferential to a Micra, I should know, the wife ran one for 10 years.

I rather been seen knobing a Labrador in the High Street than be seen driving one of these again.

Piss poor handling, wallowy, gutless engine. Dangerously bad brakes.

People go on about the reliability, but this is one car that I wished would blow up. POS!

And the FiL always commented how 'nippy' it was, it wouldn't 'nip' if you shoved 10,000 volts through it AARRGGHHHH!!!!!!

All your observations are true. But you can't say it hasn't got character. wink

I have very little concern for my car image when I'm commuting. It's economical. Its so bad, its fun! What's not to like?

Parents in law had one of these. Always overheated. The K11 Micra is far superior in every respect and there are tons about for that kind of money.

If you count character as annoying, hateful, inept and horrendous, then yes, it has bags full.

(and no, it does not come into it's so bad it's good territory, it's just bad/end.

Had an '89 as my first car. Was rubbish, but made me appreciate everything else I drove from then on. HG went eventually and px'd in that condition somehow.

Always joked with my mates that it didn't have a left wing-mirror as they never thought you'd get out the inside lane. Anyone know if that's actually the case??
