That said an Octavia especially a non-turbo must be good for 60 odd mpg and has got the biggest boot in the world.
Avoid the non-turbo at all costs, it's awful.

If the OP is considering the old shape Octavia, the 110TDi is the way to go. It runs on fumes and goes quite well when needed.

Diesels frustratingly slow? I would disagree. Small petrol engines are frustratingly slow. I should know the wife drives a 1.4 Jazz and that is desperately slow. The 1.9 tdi that many people have recommended is certainly quick enough. Personally I love the torque that a diesel has compared to a petrol. Also you say that they cost more to buy. Yes this is true but when you are spending only 4k the price difference isn't so huge as to make a difference. Also a diesel will be worth more when you come to sell it on. The economy gains of diesel over petrol aren't to be sniffed at either.
Haven't driven the 1.9 but I've owned the 2.0 140bhp. I remember it ran out of steam very quickly and the power band was tiny. Great on a long run but annoying round town.

I couldn't live with it so I jogged it on.

I'm just not a diesel fan and prefer to spend the money on petrol. if I was doing mega miles I'm sure I'd think twice but, well, I'm not.

OP.....octavias are a fantastic motor. Probably won't hold the value that an Audi would (because of this country's second national obsession.....which is Audis) but at this range depreciation probably won't be much of a factor.

Original Honda Insight. Might be hard to find one though or maybe not. Go wild in the isles with the MPG in one of those.
