Having just taken delivery of my new car I've had the chance to play with this feature tonight. First impressions are very good in the way it switches very quickly between high and low beams dependant on what it sees in front.

It did get confused by the odd reflective road sign but overall worth the extra £90 on the spec sheet.

So does it automatically turn the high beam on when there are no street lights?

Yes, and off when it sees head or tail lights, or street lights.

Give it chance. It's a bit like accepting auto lights and wipers or using cruise effectively. I'm all for advancing technology. I've left the beam on loads of times by accident for a few seconds and blinded oncoming vehicles and am regularly blinded myself.

If it has to see them first then surely that's already too late?

You can normally see the oncoming car lighting up the scenery/corner before you see the actual headlights. I doubt this tech is that sensitive

I've had it on two cars now over the last five years and I'm still not sure about it.

Soon there will be nothing left to think about when driving a car................

Brake assist - high beam assist - ABS - Stability control - self park facility - parking sensors - automatic lights on - rain sensitve wipers - adaptive cruise control............

I might be alone but I like driving and I prefer to be in control rather than controlled so I'll carry on driving car with the min ammount of nanny devices

With all that stuff taken car of I'm sure the vast majority of car drivers have 100% better concentration on the task of steering and being aware of the surroundings and road conditions

or not

self cancelling indicators were the start of this rot and I don't like them much either wink

If this tech can automatically contact the DVLA and revoke your licence if it senses you driving around a streetlit urban area with your main beams on, then I'm all for it.

You realise that with the exception of Emergency Brake Assist and ABS - all of those you have listed can be turned off, right?

Get with the times, grandad! biggrin

If it stops morons from driving along dark A/B roads on dipped lights when I'm following them then I'm all for it.

Can't add any more to what Defcon5 has said. You can see the light long before the car in most cases, I hate it when people only dip their headlights after they are in direct sight of my vehicle.

Exactly !!! it's not that hard seeing as you're (supposed to be) looking that way any way, even on country lanes i dip my beams at every corner so i can tell if there's a car coming (or my main beam washes out thiers lighting up the outside of the corner) not only so as not to blind then but so i know what to expect round the corner.

Another few years you'll be able to pop in the back seat, shag the nanny and not have to woryy about anything other than STDs rolleyes
