I make a point of using the sheds if the kids need a lift for any reason.

Tends to stop them asking unless it's important. Apparently a rusty MK1 Ka or K11 Micra with a heatshield rattle isn't cool. biglaugh

My daughter goes to a private school.

We aren't wealthy just make sacrifices with clothes, holidays etc.

Car of choice for the affluent or the want to be perceived as affluent; the usual large German barges, RR Velars, one AM Vantage.

Some are doctors, dentists, business owners, surgeons, so obviously earn top money and rightly so.
Most are ok to talk to, but as with any group of people, some are total arrogant tossers.

Some of all that show is probably a house of cards and one major client loss away from financial disaster.

Credit cards maxed out and mortgaged to the hilt, but impresses the other shallow parents no doubt.

I turn up in my average family hatchback - but can sleep at night (apart from the school fees, but my choice)

Very interesting people watching at parents evenings - the beautiful people gravitate to their peers.
I am polite and sociable but as I am not one of the above professions, prefer to just blend in and remain anonymous. I have no need, desire (or money) to impress those people.

I also prefer to remain in the shadows and keep them guessing.
Certainly is some satisfaction to be had in seeing the yummy mummy's wondering why this person is not fawning over them...

There’s two Bentyagas on regular basis at ours (actually three - one family has his and hers for some bizarre reason)
A big 4x4 cohort of FFRR, RRS, various Discoveries, Cayenne, Macan, Tesla X
Someone has a tasty Mustang and I’ve once seen a parent drop off in an electric blue Aventador which elicited this sort of reaction

I used to go to school on a Tiger Cub and all my class mates loved it and were envious because they still had bikes. Later in life I went back to see the school by invitation (they needed money of course) and it being a fine day took the Lynx D-type. Not one child was remotely interested.

I used to enjoy my commute from Sandbach to Handforth going through the country villages and the cars I used to see was amazing. Range Rovers/Bentleys etc. I even saw 2 Ferrari FF's in one day once. cool

Where I am now I get excited if I see a 3 series that is a higher spec than a 320d! hehe

I think this is largely reflective of the span of the top 1% uk earners.

I scan read a report from the IFS the other day and was surprised by the numbers. The median salary was lower than I expected, as was median household income. The top 12% contribute 30% of tax, and the bottom 20% (or was it 25?) take more from the state than they earn. A real reflection of the real world and how much some are struggling and the rich poor divide.

The interesting and relevant part was in the top 1%. To be in the top 5% of earners an individual needs to earn approx 77k. To be top 1% you’ll need approx 120k (so roughly 11 grand additional per 1% averaged out). But, to be top 0.5 you need double that of the 1% at 250k, and top 0.1 requires 700k!

With 120k income pre tax, 4K per term = 12k per year. 3 kids, 36k a year for school. Even top 1%ers will be making sacrifices. But those in the top 0.5 or top 0.1% have 6 times the income of the top 1%. These are the people who have all kids in the private schools, plus a Bentayga and an R8 etc.

The majority of the income in the top 0.5% is derived from company dividends, equity and investments. Even though the top 12% contribute 30% of the nations tax, it the top 0.5 who are dodging it and where the really money is. I think that’s the point the beardy guy in question time made badly.

So, if you want a Bentayga and private school with no trade off, own and run a company or 3, and dodge the tax.

I was in a early 80's ford..so old skool it came as standard with a driver side wing mirror only. Sadly got rid of after someone reversed into it but rust would of eventually taken over anyway..took my parents all over London and beyond!

I find it a mix at my kids schools. There are clearly a lot off wealthy parents and some type of Range Rover is the most frequent vehicle of choice with the odd super car thrown in. Then there’s a lot of parents likely cutting every corner to pay the school fees and hence quite a number of elderly sheds as well.

I noticed this when my daughter was at school. The cars were either top end or sheds. People who paid the fees and not noticed it or those that went without for the sake of the kids education. Little in between.

Over the years there was a couple of fathers that topped themselves. One from the flash car set who's business went and it turned out he's was up to his neck in debt and another from the shed end who lost his job and the pressure of feeling he let his family down sent him over the edge (literally). Sad.

rofl Perhaps, Batman, they're wondering why there's a weirdo stood in the corner staring while all the other parents are talking about their kids. Cringetastic!

But then it wouldn't make the noise that makes all the kids' mates look and see them in the supercool Micra 16v Dimension. laugh

I literally drive right in if I'm taking them to school (if it's bouncing outside and the bus hasn't turned up) and say 'Bye [KIDS FULL NAMES]' just so everyone sees them. I'm a bd really. laugh

The boy finds it funny and goes with it, but the girl doesn't appreciate my humour. laugh

Lift requests are at an all time low. biggrin

As private schools are around £15k a year and upwards, being able to skim that amount off of your annual clothing and holiday budget means you are wealthy. Lots of people don't even take home £15k a year from a full time job.

It means you have a good income. He could have been wealthy, but he's spent it on private schooling and is now potless. Income and wealth are entirely different concepts.

As a kid I remember 9 up in an Austin Maxi once.Think it was the sporty 1750 one so had enough poke, just a bit tight inside.

Childless so I tend to avoid the roads from 14:45 until 16:00 round my way as it's absolute carnage.

My comment was always 2nd class driving is better than 1st class walking biggrin
