Just how accurate are the mpg figures quoted on Autotrader? Trying to make comparisons may be a tad dangerous if they come from all over the place!

Is there an alternative source with real world mpg figures anywhere?

Thanks.

Most come from the manufacturer - and most manufacturer MPG figures are lies, damn lies and statistics hehe

Thought as much. My Vectra is quoted as maxing out AT 45MPG. On a good run I have managed 40.....just.

My Picanto's combined MPG is 58.9 aparrently - after 5100 miles it's consistently returning between 55 and 56. So not that bad. Doesn't get driven like it's target market normally will either hehe

Some cars figures are laughable though

Doesn't the small print on AT say 'only applies to current model' even though you might be looking at a much older and (potentially) more inefficient model?

I think if you look at the combined figure you're about where you'd expect the car to be MPG wise.

Example, I run a 530d which averages between 34 and 40mpg.

Autotrader has combined for the 530d as 37.7. I have had over 46 mpg (extra urban), but I was driving very lightfooted.

I'm wondering if someone can tell me how long a pint of milk will last in my fridge when, in certain circumstances, I can use as little as a thimble a day. What can I expect through normal drinking? What about if I drink enthusiastically? Does the consumption improve if I buy Cravendale rather than the usual supermarket muck? Thanks.

I wonder how many times you've pressed the F5 button as you sit there waiting on the praise of your comedy genius. Such off-the-wall humour is almost guaranteed to get you your own guest slot on Lee Nelson's show, then your own series on BBC3. A few slots on 8 out of 10 cats will follow, you'll write with Harry Enfield, Ricky Gervais will name-drop you at some awards ceremony, you're almost in the big time...

Never lose sight of the dream.

If you live in a very flat area, and If your roads are all long straight with no stopping and If you drive like a granny... then yes they are probably right.

I tend to half them so see what I will get smile

I tend to find that knocking 10-15% off the quoted figure gives you the real figure.

For example, my 2003 Nissan Primera 1.8 SE Estate is quoted as 46.3mpg extra urban. In the real world, driving at 65mph on the motorway, it will just manage 40mpg. Get upto 80mph and you wont see over 35mpg.

Autocar did a test a 'real world vs quoted mpg' test a few months back, might be worth digging out.

It seemed to be that the more powerful the car was the closer they got to the official figures, I think a skyline actually beat it's combined figures. For what it's worth, I get pretty much the combined figures on my 328i (30ish mpg) and also did on my 2.0 litre Vectra (36ish mpg).

The test is unfair for non-plug in hybrids like the prius as they are allowed to start with a full battery, hence the amazing figures they get in the tests.
