Car Collection on a Budget
Discussion
Wouldn't it be great to have a garage full of appreciating classic Ferraris, Lambos, Porsches, rare Mercs and BMWs?
Unfortunately I don't have the spare cash for that but I've been thinking about building a nice collection on a budget. Let's say 10 grand to start with. The rules are that you need to buy two cars to get the collection going and you have a max of 10 grand to spend.
The cars must be sporty, interesting, rare, have some kind of historical significance and be likely to increase in value (or at least not depreciate that much)over the medium-long term.
I'll start with these two.

The BMW might not be the rarest but I think in time the good 3.0 cars will be collectable. A lower milage example would be ideal.

I was initially looking for a MkI Golf GTI but couldn't find one. I reckon this 205 is a good substitute.

£2k on a Mk1 MX-5
£2k on a W126 500 SEL
Split the rest between a Series I land rover and a mk1 Honda Insight.
You won't lose much money on them, they've all sank about as low as they'll go.
Do you think you'd be able to get a 500 SEL in good condition for that kind of money? I'm not so sure.£2k on a W126 500 SEL

The MX-5 is quite a good shout but I've never really been a fan.
The Landy and Honda are good suggestions but not for my collection - must be at least a little sporty.

I reckon I could put up with a 3 car garage consisting of a Mazda MX-5 Mk1 or alternatively a 944 S2, a Toyota MR2 Turbo, and a Honda Integra Type-R.
Honda Integra Type R would be a good addition. Definitely a place in history for that.Less sure about the 944 S2 and MR2 Turbo... are they special enough? 944 Clubsport maybe, but that's way over budget.
Do you have to include one daily driver in the £10K collection? Or can we presume reliable commuting transport taken care of?
If so, I'm going to say:
Mazda MX5 MK1 - £1650.
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3182936.htm
Ford Puma - £1775.
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3211300.htm
TVR S3 - £4K.
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3127019.htm
Old Land Rover, Series IIA - £2700.
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3206834.htm
A smidge over £10K for that lot. Bargainous.

I reckon the RS is about done with depreciation and is a fast Ford, so will go for silly money in future. The Mini is already increasing in value.

Ok, to make it a little more difficult I reckon going for 4 cars on £10k budget. Then it is a collection rather than just what could be a daily and weekend drivers
Here's my selection of classics. The value on these must surely only have one direction from now on! All rare, interesting etc.

Getting rare, and can only go up in value: MK3 Ford Escort RS1600i (£3k)

No collection is complete without a classic Mini: (£1.8K)

This is my favourite post so far. Fits perfectly with what I was thinking. That RS look very, very nice.http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3130692.htm

I like the idea of four cars but also like the options that become available when you have 5K per car to spend. I really like the Escort but not in love with the Lotus or Pontiac. Here's my selection of classics. The value on these must surely only have one direction from now on! All rare, interesting etc.

The M3 is the least desireable version of a car which isn't that desireable anyway - not a good choice IMOUnfortunately I don't have the spare cash for that but I've been thinking about building a nice collection on a budget. The 205 is a cracking choice - but not that one, it's FAR FAR too expensive (most 205 GTIs are now climbing in value but that's a bit silly).
I'm sorry but I just dont see the MX5 becoming a collectors car, ever!
I know they're good, but they are so mass produced! And they still make them in a new form. They just aren't rare or special enough because they're so useable!
I know I suggested the Mini, but there is only one Mini! The BMW Minis aren't minis.

Subaru Impreza P1 - surely there is no argument against this one!

Here's a cheaper 205... not quite a s nice as the last one I posted but significantly less pricey.
