Wouldn't it be great to have a garage full of appreciating classic Ferraris, Lambos, Porsches, rare Mercs and BMWs?

Unfortunately I don't have the spare cash for that but I've been thinking about building a nice collection on a budget. Let's say 10 grand to start with. The rules are that you need to buy two cars to get the collection going and you have a max of 10 grand to spend.

The cars must be sporty, interesting, rare, have some kind of historical significance and be likely to increase in value (or at least not depreciate that much)over the medium-long term.

I'll start with these two.

The BMW might not be the rarest but I think in time the good 3.0 cars will be collectable. A lower milage example would be ideal.

I was initially looking for a MkI Golf GTI but couldn't find one. I reckon this 205 is a good substitute.
The M3 is the least desireable version of a car which isn't that desireable anyway - not a good choice IMO

The 205 is a cracking choice - but not that one, it's FAR FAR too expensive (most 205 GTIs are now climbing in value but that's a bit silly).
Watch straight 2 door e36 m3 values over the next two years. Right mileage, right colour and spec ones are beginning to turn.

E46 m3s conversely seem to be taking a battering at the lower end currently though.

for me, it'd be worthwhile to have a few condition 2 examples rather than minters. rolling restos which could share daily duties to avoid becoming further shagged.

i'll go with:

decent triumph dolomite sprint - £2k
porsche 914 - £5k
mgb gt - £2k
bmw e28 snotter - £1k

thing is mate, whilst this is totally possible in europe, it can only stay in fantasy land out here. my frustrating search for an interesting car with character out here is testament to that.

You're right about the car search here, when I was looking it seems that people just don't look after older cars - it's almost impossible to get something of age, in decent condition. I had a look at a couple of E55 AMGs (W210) that were deceidely ropey but described as mint condition.

This is pure fantasy for me right now but when I return to the UK in a year or two, it might be something I look at. Anyway, it's a good way to pass a boring afternoon at work... productivity slump.

Forgot to comment on your car suggestions, Shirt.

Triumph - Not really a fan, I can see the appeal but not for me.
Porsche - Fantastic, I'd have one in a heartbeat.
MG - Again, not my cup of tea.
BMW - I'd love one, although not a snotter.

I'd easily have one of those in the collection but not both (only room for one barge). Can you really get a decent E34 M5 for 4K? I'd love one but not if it was a money-pit.

Problem is, unlike its predecessor, it has no real reason to appreciate in value because it wasn't that well thought of at the time. It had a fantastic engine and that's about it.

I don't think they'll hit 'original' M3 values - maybe really, really tidy ones might hold their value and, eventually, when most others have been shedded/modded/dedded they'll be worth something - but I don't see them being future classics other than by sheer rarity (and right now there's a tonne of cheap and nasty ones around).

It really depends WHY you're starting a collection of course - do you intend to use it or is it purely for preservation or future appreciation or what??

Subaru Impreza P1 - surely there is no argument against this one!

Here's a cheaper 205... not quite a s nice as the last one I posted but significantly less pricey.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3185372.htm
That 205 is a more sensible example if you intend to use it rather than cherish it for sure smile

The P1 - I'm not 100% sold on 3-door-Imprezas, probably fuelled by mate who ended-up with his in a garage for 6 weeks waiting for a bit of glass for it smile

I think that P1 has a BIT more to lose before it starts to gain but it's a decent concept (as was the earlier Focus RS around the same price).

Cheaper RS option would be an FRP - good, unmolested ones are getting rarer and prices have probably bottomed-out for those now (some are below £4K but they tend to be moody).

as you say, they are either shagged and priced like they're mint, or genuinely very good/mint and priced like they're made from unobtainium.

there's some nice merc barges on dubizzle at the mo, and also a few r107 sl's. thing is, a half decent one of either will be over £10k out here.

there's an e28 520i at al awir but it ain't a nice one. i went to ajman 4 times to see a bmw 3.0cs [they were shut the first 3 times] only to find it was a pig frown

i'm seriously thinking about importing a porsche 914 atm.

Excuse my ignorance but what's an FRP? Racing Puma maybe? I'm not really a Ford buff.

The scarcity of parts for the P1 wouldn't put me off. I absolutely love the 3-door Impreza shape and as time passes the chav image will wear off. If I was actually going to go ahead with this endeavour, it would be hard to convince me not to buy that Subaru.
