I really think that Porsche are painting themselves into a corner with the 911, they cannot change too much for fear of losing their hard-core fan boys so they keep churning out models which look ugly and boring compared to other producers.

One can only yawn....

I think it looks lovely, quite a big difference from the 997 too.

Matc - I agree completely, some people love it others can't stand it.

From what leadership at Zuffenhausen say they concerned that they need another car to compete specifically against Ferrari and also I would assume Lambo:

And what I read into it is that that car will definitely not be a 911 variant....

Why would they want to compete with Lambo, they are part of the same group.

marf - Wow you have posted 16,210 posts in 90 months at first I was shocked by such a feat.

Then, "reading" your post I realise that if all your posts gave the same level of measured thinking and relevant input it was probably easy.

why change a winning formula? the 911 looks beautiful, and anyone who takes the time to look at them properly can see the differences between them.
anyone who listens to jeremy clarkson will say they all look the same.

The new Porsche boss I understand sees them all as "Italians" and therefore would accept some product cannibalisation.

I've seen this attitude in fortune 100 companies many times, down to personalities and egos.

Ah, "sample of one" thinking. I see now how you jump to such asinine conlusions as you demonstrate in your OP. smile

Also don't be shocked, there are many other people on this site who have posted more than me and in less time, but still, I'm glad that you have taken an interest at least.

To be fair, you made quite a pointless post. Porsche have always been this way, its nothing new.

Posts/comments about 911 design like this mildly boil my p*ss, sorry OP, but just sounds like you're repeating the ramblings of Clarkson after he's had a long lunch. With his boring lazy attitude to being 'controversial' for TV rating.

911 have been taking and 'evolutionary' approach to design of the 911 since they launched it in 1963. Why does it come as a surprise that they haven't changed the philosophy this time when they haven't for the best part of 50 years?

Because its works. Its aerodynamic, its very attractive, yes some might say boring, because things that dont' change become normal and that is a bit boring. But if it ain't broke why fix it. Its one of the most successful sports cars ever, that isnt' because they've been cocking it up all this time is it.

They deviated from the round headlights with the 996 and I have to say, I was never a fan and I don't think its aged that well as a design either.

The 997.1/.2 are stunning and to my eyes the best yet, I like the new one too and I can clearly see the differences.

Not sure about the new rear lines / tail lights but I love the 911. Always have.. More so since the 04/05 headlight change back to oval.

In a world full of, quite frankly, ugly and boring new cars the 911 cuts right through them with it's classic timeless shape.

I hope they never drastically change the 911. Nothing dates as well as a 911!! Not nowadays anyhow.

A constructive response to the majority of the intelligent and good natured comments:

Design boffins were hoping that that new 911 would be an evolutionary step towards the widely well received design of the 918 Hybrid, a more exotic shape considered on par aesthetically with Italian marques according to Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller.

The general shape of a '911' is a trademark that works. Name another car that looks anything like the '911'. Nobody mistakes that car with anything else.

Leave aesthetic design revision for the sake of it, and therefore copying and diluting, to the mass market.

Voight, that is my point exactly - they haven't exactly done well with launching some beefier models such as the 928 and they cannot deviate too greatly from the 911 trademark. As I said it concerns me they are painting themselves in a corner.

I agree OP, I dont think there's another prestige performance brand I care less about than Porsche. In my eyes they're overpriced, bland looking cars aimed at the middle aged grey hair crowd who want to show their wealth but haven't got the balls to get a Lambo.
