Turbos For Next Civic Type R?

Honda toys with turbocharging for its next hot Civic

With all the glitzy, exciting and above all fast metal (and carbon fibre) on display at this year's Frankfurt motor show, you'll probably forgive us for having not thus far covered the launch of a new Honda Civic.

But while news of a new Civic doesn't really earn a place on a website largely dedicated to the discussion of performance cars, it does mean that a new Civic Type R is on the way.

Honda won't confirm, however, that the hot hatch Civic, which is due to be with us in early 2013, will carry the Type R badge (though it would be a brave chap indeed to bet against it).

But a hot Civic - whatever it ends up being called - is definitely on its way and, according to our chums at What Car?, it could even end up with a turbocharged engine.

Civic development leader Mitsuru Kariya told WC? at the Frankfurt show that the new 'Type R' will get 'at least' 250bhp - pretty much the hot hatch pre-requisite these days, especially if you want to take on the likes of the Renault Megane 250 Cup and the new Ford Focus ST.

But worry not (yet), fans of natural aspiration - Honda is going to think very hard before it plumbs a turbocharger into one of its performance cars and, although this seems the likely outcome, Honda is keen to point out that it may yet plump for a non-turbo motor.

What is going on with medium size hatchbacks at the moment? The Civic, Focus, Leon & others, they all seem to be getting bigger & ugly.

What's the going weight for a medium sized hatchback at the moment?

It looks like they've copied that SEAT Boca Negra thing. The current shape one is much nicer imo. If they stick with an NA engine then it will probably be a hybrid too, so what does everyone prefer a turbo or a hybrid?

I've been a fan of Hondas and especially the Civic Type R but this looks horrid. What's the bet it will weigh more than a small moon....

The n/a engine is what mde it different from all the other hot hatches out there, so if it wants to compete with them it had best be bloody good!

I know you guys love your focus but I'd have this over it anyday while the SVT versions of the fords are peppy they cant hold a candle to Honda build quality or stunning engine too bad the body is so ugly. Its like a girl with a great personality.

I saw a press pic of the car in white yesterday and it looks stunning. This isn't the best colour choice to be fair. Can't wait to see the 3 door version.

I think the shape is VERY colour dependent. Not keen in white at all and that green just isn't a nice colour period. I think the shape does suit darker shades though, it does look quite nice in the new blue colour they also have on display at Frankfurt...

I quite like that.

I disagree, a few years back the girl i was dating had a Civic type R, & her brother had a Focus ST, the Ford was superior in pretty much every way, & more fun to drive. The 2.5 engine made the Civics 2.0 V-Tec feel quite dated. I went out of my way to avoid driving the Civic, it just felt cheap & basic. I am a fan of Honda in general, but either they're not what they used to be, or others have caught up & even overtaken them.

i-Vtec and Turbocharged will be very good. The Vtec system can be tuned improve the spool and lag of the turbo. If they could tune a light pressure variable geometry turbocharged engine so it complies with emissions and fuel economy, but still retain that 8000rpm top end it would be a fantastic engine.

Looks like a reaosnable evolution of the curernt model, slightly diluted but less likely to date so quickly. I'm not keen on that rear 3/4 and wheel arch though!

As for the introduction of the turbo Type R, well nothing is more predictable than that given that emissions regs have killed off other high-revving engines and the trend is towards small capacity turbos.

I like that, but only in the darker colour and the three door will hopefully look a bit better overall.

I'd like to see a hybrid Type R, but I anm guessing it could go 1.6 turbo because of the costs involved?

Eh well. Since emissions laws killed off the old high revvy Type-R and VTi motors I've been wondering if Honda were going to come up with great engine development to rediscover their performance soul across their range.
Seems not for now and that they're going down the same turbo route as everybody else. Maybe they'll do something better or innovative but more than likely it'll just be another turbo car fighting in the market and struggling to stand out.

Never thought this shape of Civic was great and this evolution is not coming across as an improvement but c'mon who picked that colour for a motor show?

I'd like to see a high revving petrol with hybrid tech to pass emissions.

As for costs as above, they have the CRZ thing which was meant to be sporty (never driven one to be fair) so maybe they can have a proper go on the all new CTR?

Couldn't disagree more. I like the Focus ST, but its overweight and not as much fun when going for it.

I am a big fan of the older Honda's and I just dont understand what has happened to Honda in the last 10 years, they are a shadow of their former selves.

The focus ST is/always has been a much "better" car than the Honda IMO. Friend had a focus and civic type r, focus felt much better quality and was much more fun to drive.
