Gumtree wields some spectacular bargains, I have bought many a motor off Gumtree London, don't knock it!

Admittedly I usually view the cars in my trainers in case I need to run.

If you look behind some of the illiterate ads there is often the odd gem tucked away.

Was thinking about an A8 but just bough a manual E39 530 smile

Just took a look at Gumtree. Now how many alarm bells does this advert ring? In a few seconds:

The reg is 04 but it's claimed to be an 01
It's a 240 but with a 2.6 litre engine

Though I suspect the pictures are muddled up (cloth v. leather, purple v. black) the biggest put off is the offer to fit chrome wheel arches.

I can see what would happen here,

Its like going to the Dogs home, and flling for some porr old fella with a hard luck story and sad, sad eyes, lets call him "Mr Woof", Mr Woof settles in and is a dream with kids, still does the guard dog thing, still fetches a stick, ok a bit creaky in the morning but not too bad, he then needs some injections and the vet suggests a little op to give him more quality of life, lets say a Hernia is noticed, the bills start adding up and before you know it Mr Woof is needing medication at £100 a month, special food and regular Vets visits, the vet keeps coming up with solutions to keep him going and you cant bear to part with him.

So, with this, first bill, shotgun to the back of the head.

Not going to rise to that one, my friend. Rather goes against my shedonomics principles to spend anything other than maintenance money on it, however.

Ah the chrome wheel arch kit, sign of a prosperous gent or utter ****. Agreed, sounds dodgy.

Here is a great gumtree ad that a mate found, very entertaining.....

The thing which tends to get cars like this is rot and seizure - bushes perishing, fluids gradually leaking etc. - and that's more a product of time than mileage (in fact low mileages are often signs of lots of standing around which can even accelerate this stuff).
Perished bushes are the least of my worries on a 15 year old bargain barge. If they are perished, change them... or tape them up and douse everything in sight with spray grease! hehe

Ahh, the Covin. Remember it well despite my best efforts.

Doesn't that thing fill it's wheel arches out nicely? XR3 engine with a beetle chassis. Why on earth did they do it?

The best bit is the £2200 asking price, pretty much the best example of extreme optimism since the last Greek bailout.

The 2.8, in FWD guise (which is most of them) is a lot less troublesome in the gearbox department than the other models. It seems the extra strain of the 4wd system kills them.

Although fluid changes help a lot the early 5-speeds (DTD and DTE codes IIRC) seem to just simply wear out at not always a lot of miles. Like a clutch, once all the friction material has gone, they won't work very well......

The last couple of years D2 A8 production seem to be more reliable and not just because they are newer.

So you'd save a heap of money and dispatch Mr. Puppy on being quoted for his first injections?

Sigh.

I so miss my lovely, lovely A8. That engine is an absolute cracker, one of the most comfortable, complete cars I've ever owned.

As others say, at this price point there is no risk. Mine was £3k, which is tricky- Since you can't just scrap it but a new box is £1500+... But £950? Sell half for parts, weigh rest in.

Beautiful.

One point worthy of mention is that the 4.2s got double glazing as standard- Don't think this applied to the 2.8s. Anecdotally it makes the car so, so much quieter. And the fuel economy's not massively different.

Amazed that the advert was not pulled as of now.
I am in need of a new office chair and could use the
rear bench as a nice leather sofa in the wintergarden.

The engine and the aluminium hull should make for about
1.000,- cash in scrap worth.

What's the trick here? ? That's awfully cheap for a running
and complete A8.

Very nice shed! I've always liked the subtle, understated styling of the first A8s. No fuss, no LED DRLs, just smooth, clean lines and simplicity. I'd say it looks better than the current A8!

I'd worry about electrical gremlins in buying a car this sophisticated of its age. VAG products of the era weren't known for their bulletproof electronics (I should know, we've got a '98 Jetta MkIII VR6, lovely engine, scensoredy electrics.)

Well did you "Win" said Land Rover..
In my experience of Ebay, failed to make reserve usually means
Re List or if your lucky the seller may contact you to say your bid gets it..
Sorry about this as it's seriously off topic..
Regarding the A8 shed..
Take the risk, enjoy and if it goes bang the parts should sell well to cover the loss..
doogz said:
Well, i was the highest bidder in the auction, but it never made it's reserve price.

Re-phrase it for me if it's upsetting you.
