THe family's current garage consists of a Mazda 6 MPS,Audi TT,and skyline weekend toy. NOt a winter friendly garage
confused

They're all all/four-wheel drive are they not?

Spend £500 on a set of winter tyres/chains for one of them and do without the additional tax, maintenance and insurance of another vehicle.
TT is probably FWD, Skyline most likely RWD. I Agree though, put a set of winter tyres on any one of them (Mazda MPS probably for me) and you're sorted for 99% of what UK winter can throw at you. A £500 car is never a £500 car after all.

These people speak wisely; some steel wheels and the cheapest new snow tyres you can get to fit them will be less than a 'cheap' 4x4.

haven't used it for months as i have bought a digger and have been doing the garden.

I must get it fired up before winter so we don't get snowed in ever

Ooh, filled with want. Can you really get a functional one for 2k, or are you fibbing for PH effect? It's like a tractor, only better!

If you want to keep moving, your best shot is learning how all the levers and buttons work.
A 4x4 is about as useless as any other vehicle if you don't understand the function of diff locks and low range gears. It'll transfer all its power to the one wheel without any grip as readily as a 2wd vehicle unless you force it not to.
+1 yes

And your point about a 500pound shed will break down... i have a 500 fiesta shed which has never broken down.
How much maintenance does it require though? You've spent nothing on it? The comparison here is the running costs of a separate £500 shed vs a set of winter tyres.
i did buy an electric window switch of ebay for 6quid. But not needed to spend anything else.

So by a process of extrapolation, no £500 sheds will need any money spent on repair or servicing.

Yeah, but by the same measure you can't say all will.....

My £400 E-class has been with me a year, it's rusty and I abuse it, two mountain bikes live in the back, I commute in it daily and have done 13,000 miles in it in 13 months, it's got 212,000 miles on the clock and all it's needed are brake pads all round, two tyres (all consumables imo) and a £60 weld to pass the MOT. It averages 30 MPG and all cost considered it's costing me so far about 25p a mile. granted I've had a fair few shed and most have been st, it's the only shed I've ever owned where having no breakdown cover doesn't have me worried every time I drive it...

Of course not, it's simply a risk which is more likely on a cheap banger.

Last winter I bought a Subaru Forester, which came with M&S tyres. It's a two litre auto, no diff locks or traction control. It is astonishing on snow and ice. So good we sold our proper car.
Bought at 126k, now at 135k. Only spend was a cam belt (just in case) and front pads. It is fairly slow, and drinks like a fish.
Fantastic car, get one.

A pal of mine, who stays in Midlothian, has recently purchased a 6MPS for winter duties.

Thats not what i said. I was just commenting on the post which stated a 500pound car will need money spending on it. Not always the case at all.

Same goes with any car worth any sort of money unless it is brand new, it might or might not need money spending on it.

Why not put snow tyres on it?
