The low price is killing them off sadly - they are now being bought by knuckledraggers with the pre-purchase research skills of a dead walrus who either end up flogging them on even cheaper in a broken state after 6 months of neglect, or simply park them in a tree at 155mph.

I was told that an M5 isnt all that fast as it is Rear wheel drive and those cant corner and it is too heavy to accelerate well by an integra type R driver so maybe that has something to do with it?
I wont rest until I know if this ^^^ is serious or not. laugh

Eye watering running costs and the curse of the V8 saloon come to all marques eventually.

Audi B7 RS4's are now dipping well below the 20k mark. In a few years time it will be their turn to be bought by people who have no idea what it costs to keep them in tip top condition. There will be an ever decreasing amount in proper enthusiasts hands. I see this happening more to the saloon than the Avant.

Why are they cheap?

Their age, the running costs and the economy.

I owned one for four years. Lovely thing. It cost around £25K to run over that period (warranty helped!) - plus fuel. I averaged 18mpg over 50,000 miles. A new engine is about £10K. Vanos failures are rare. A set of tyres will be a grand. A clutch about the same, which you shoudl expect to replace every 50,000 miles. There are lots of (expensive) things to go wrong, even of they are not as electronically hamstrung as current cars.

Given that most of them have 100,000 on the clock, I'd say prices are about right in the current climate. If you can get a genuine minter for £6K then it will be worth keeping. Otherwise, be very wary.

The old adage applies - running costs do not decline in line with the car's value. They were around £60K new and have running costs to match.

Why on earth would it need a new engine ?

It's a V8 BMW not a Cerbera - surely they should do 130k+

Have you noticed the mileage on your typical £6k M5?

There's plenty on M5Board with 150k+, some with 200k+.
I sold mine when it had done 122k, and it was just run in.
If you get one, get a post 2001 facelift. No issue with VANOS etc.
Not too expensive to run IMO, you can easily average 25mpg, specialist servicing isn't too expensive, and many jobs are DIY.

I bought my E39 530d in March, I have really fallen for the cars charm, even a boring old diesel!! I keep getting tempted to px against a nice M5, but I really don't think I could put up with 2/300 miles to a full tank that is circa £100! Gah, so tempting but must-keep-sensible-head-on!

Slightly off topic, how fast do you think they will fall when the new M5 is released, as I can see the E60 taking a real hammering!
Cant see the new £80k M5 having much effect on the value of E39 M5's....how many will be trading in their £10k M5 against one?
The E60 is a different case though. Top end E60's have to be set for the mother of all pasteings given that new machine is faster and way more economical.
