It's a £1500 car on a good day with a working engine. Keep hold of it til your situation improves, sell something else in the meantime and spend the £300 or so at a scrappy to get a replacement engine put in

Break it for spares - mx5 parts are big business at the moment my mate has just made loads breaking a rotten one and selling bits from it

Engines on eBay for c£200-£300 for a 1.8.

Half a day to swap, it's easy.

Sell old engine for spares - £50?

Strangely, an engine swap is normally easier than engine repairs. Disconnect everything, haul out, drop in, re-connect. It really is fairly straightforward.
I know an engine swap is actually far easier, unfortunately unable to do this myself, and have no mechanic mates either. I do however live near a very highly rated Mazda indie garage who could do an engine change for £3-400, but it's just a case of sourcing a decent replacement myself. Even better is they have a contact that supplies fully guaranteed, low mileage replacements and all in that would be pretty much a grand.

I'm divided now between just laying the car up as SORN for the winter and re-thinking things next year or just cutting losses asap. Even with an engine transplant the car still needs at least two new tyres, a full geo set-up and both bumpers resprayed to get to my ideal standard, and I had wanted one to do some subtle mods to as well. So even next year I'd be looking at £4-500, so that would've been in excess of the value of the car spent on it within a year which seems foolish.

I think on another level I will always have mixed vibes about the car now and wonder what else may have been bodged in the past.

Try www.wewantanycar.com - when I was selling my 1-series, WWAC offered me £2k above WBAC's offer, which put it just under (by about £300) the private sale value I was looking at getting.

Otherwise, a trade-in or stick it on Gumtree and let some mouthbreather take it.
WWAC valuation £500-550.

Have filled out details on motorhog too. At least it gives me a starting point on an e-bay ad.

How close is the 1.8 in the MX5 to the Ford Duratec 1.8? If they were similar enough, I know you can get engines from Mondeos for £200 no problems.

I'd never heard of this one. So I entered my Volvo 360's details out of interest. Their offer? £0. Obviously they don't want any car.

Suprised no one has suggested a ph get together to help this fellow out and save an mx5!

I dont know mx5s but if you get an engine and arent too far i would lend a hand and tools. done an engine swap on a different car before and as said, its usually easier than some smaller jobs.

where are you?

There's a MX5 club in the Kent/Sussex area who I'm sure would be happy to lend a hand doing an engine swap.

Drop me an email if you want the details.

I was just about to suggest the old "I have a few crates of beer, can anybody spare me some time to help" . . . . . It's the sort of job that a couple of people with basic tools and an engine hoist could crack out in a day smile

Looking in the classifieds, there's plenty of mx5s around the £800-£1000 mark (assuming it's a MK1?).

I'd advertise it at £1k being honest about the fault (no need to say any more than 'uses a bit of coolant' IMO), and if you don't sell it then £850 from WBAC isn't all that bad.

Depending on the condition of the rest of the car I'd buy it off you but not for as much as WBAC would offer.

Gah. It's a GLEi SE saloon. Leather interior and aircon mind you, only 37k miles, almost concourse condition (got to fix a leak from the fuel tank breather and a snag with the heater though). Quite a rare car and spec now.

Thanks guys, have done a bit more digging and have found an MX5 specialist not a million miles away that would do an engine change for £200, so it looks like I could whittle the cost down to about £500 which sways the balance slightly. It's just a case of sourcing a decent engine.

ETA MX5 Heaven have warrantied engines for £270+Vat - I'm starting to sway back to sorting this out after all, maybe in the spring.

Well I have a big warm workshop, 2 ton engine lifter, and a stack of tools. And a handy mechanic down the road.

Just get the car and engine here, and a couple of friendly PHers, and I'm sure we could get the job done.

What a gent you are! smile I'm in North Kent. Haven't got an engine yet though, and almost certainly looking at sorting it in the spring now if at all.
