I'm currently looking at buying a reasonable sportscar, though due to budget, it is likely to be around 20 years old. At this age, condition and history are the things I'm considering, along with getting any potential purchase checked by an acknowledged independent expert in the marque/model. Which brings me to my query...

I've found the car that seems to suit - it has good history, appears to be in top order and drives well. However its being sold by one of those acknowledged independent experts in the marque, which is no bad thing, but they would be one of the bodies I'd ask to check over any potential purchase.

The other company I'd ask to check has already seen the car, and reckons its one of the best of its age/model they've seen for a while and wouldn't expect to see another one like it for a while longer. It needs a couple of minor fixes, as expected of the age, but nothing drastic.

The two companies mentioned are located about 3 miles apart and know each other well. There aren't really any others to ask for an independent check that could match the knowledge these two already have.

Am I being overly cautious here - what else have others done? I want to believe that both companies would have built their reputations on making sure these cars are in great shape, and would want to protect that, but, caveat emptor.

hmmm my take on this, if you respect their opinions enough to take them to advise on a car theyre not selling, then it's probably safe to assume the expert 3 miles up the road whio is not the potential new cars seller, can be relied upon still??
Sounds from what you have said that he/she rates the car 3 miles away, so as long as theyre not both in cahoots with each other; I'd say you already have your independant expert opinion???
Anything 20 years old, its all about how it has been maintained/pampered, so histry file and receipts is worth close scrutiny!! Good luck and enjoy it if you buy

Anyone reminded of the Stanley Mann court case?

You can always pay the RAC or AA circa £200 to do a full check of the car. I get this occasionally & would say it's worth it if your unsure.
