If you want a diesel for lots of miles you should really get an auto.
?

If they are motorway miles, that's a bit of a waste, no?

No. Unless you're driving in the middle of the night, you will get held up and have to change gear a few times.

I'm sure he gets 40p per mile to cover fuel / wear. (if not, you can claim it back from the tax man at the end of the year).
Regardless I would still go for smaller wheels, softer suspension and the less stressed motor.

Revo say...

140 remaps to 180, torque goes from 236 to 289.

170 remaps to 200, torque goes from 258 to 310.

So there must be a further difference... likely to be Turbo. But could be intake / exhaust.

If I was looking at one I'd just get the best car whether it was a 140 or 170... once remapped there's not going to be a great deal of difference!
I believe the injectors are different as well, higher peak flow (apparently, but don't quote me). The recent "don't call it a recall" recall on VAG injectors effected mainly the 170ps engines

A4 S-Lines around 2006/ 2007 are looking tempting.
OP, be aware that at the age you're looking at you may get a mix of PD and CR engines. I specifically bought the PD version of the 140ps engine, but many people prefer the less agricultural nature of the later CR engines.

I concur, although I do a lot of motorway miles I'm bloody sick of going up and down the 6 speed manual gearbox of my Passat TDi. Rather wish I'd bought an auto one instead for sheer laziness smile

I have the A6 PD 2.0TDi with a Revo remap and only use 5th and 6th on the motorway, in fact 6th is really pretty quick enough. Even in bad traffic rolling on and off the throttle you don't need to be going up and down the box. The motorway is one place this car doesn't need an auto IMHO...

Up to a point, but depends on which motorway you're on, road congestion and many other factors.

Or the S Line has the nicest interior, wheels and body kit!?
And also of one the worst judged spring/damper rates ever signed-off by a major international car manufacturer.

But what price vanity, eh?

Errrrrrm.....

A lovely 2.4 JTDM should be well within budget. 200 BHP standard, can be mapped up to 250

Oddly I had a similar conversation with a colleague a few weeks back, he wants an A4 Avant for munching miles every weekend but his OH will only allow an S-line.

I’m not 100% on this but I think the 140bhp and 170bhp outputs come from different engines, a 1.9l unit and a 2.0l unit respectively.
No, they're both 2.0.

Obviously we all have different experiences, but I drive all over the country, trying to avoid rush hour where possible, and in general don't change out of top gear from entering the motorway to leaving it. It's pretty rare that speeds drop below 50 mph on most motorways (even the M25 outside of rush hour), which still doesn't really necessitate a down change.

Good for you. Most people drive at rush hour.
It's called rush hour for a reason wink

I've tried the 140 and the 170 in various cars.

The 140 is slower, and feels it (obviously) but is nicer to drive with a manual gearbox than the 170 is.

Reason?
The 140 has torque at idle. The 170 doesn't.

Can't believe how many times I stalled the 170 coming out of junctions...
Well said Craig. I currently have 2 Audis, despite not being a fan, 1 1.9 and 2.0 tdi. A6 1.9tdi (c.130bhp) SE is a great workhorse and a very nice ride. The 2.0tdi 170 A6 S Line is the biggest pile of st I have ever had the displeasure to drive. I don't know if it's the weight of the engine, the fact it's so far forward, the 19" wheels with Bridgestone plastic pretending to be tyres, the appalling, unforgiving and unforgivable suspension or just the fact that Audi no longer know how to build a car that actually drives, but it really is a piece of st. Mine also has this adaptive steering which I don't think helps. I have had it from new, thankfully will chop it in next March 26th and can't wait to see it go. I have driven loads of other cars while I've had this (18 months now) and have to say that supercars and high end sports cars don't have such a choppy ride.

Appalling ride aside, the power on the 170 lump is a very thin band and if you're on the motorway then it's perfectly acceptable, however trying to pull out of junctions is terrible. You see a gap, foot down, nothing happens, press harder, wheels spin, brake to avoid car, reverse back to line, try again. I don't have these problems in the 1.9 though, probably why I use that for every journey instead smile

That's not what you said, you said unless you drive in the middle of the night you'll get held up etc.

I'm saying my experience doesn't back that up, I rarely drive in the middle of the night, and still don't get held up. If the OP's doing a decent amount of business miles, he may well not be driving at rush hour.

But then, I hate auto's (despite owning one, not the daily).

I live in the Southeast of England and I've no issues with a manual gearboxed diesel which doesn't pull 6th gear below about 50mph. I too hardly ever change gear on the motorway (pretty much always 6th).

I jsut find the comment odd, really. It's like autos are for people who drive at any time, and manuals are for night time...?

You southern ponces need to come try some northern motorways.

But yeah, I was exaggerating about motorways only being free flowing at night.

I still don't see why you would want a manual on a motorway car. Some cars are fun to drive, going up and down the gears. Diesels tend not to be.
