A4 S-Line diesel 140bhp or 170bhp?

You southern ponces need to come try some northern motorways.
But yeah, I was exaggerating about motorways only being free flowing at night.
I still don't see why you would want a manual on a motorway car. Some cars are fun to drive, going up and down the gears. Diesels tend not to be.
Southern? Guess that depends where in the country you're based, but I'm in North Staffs, which isn't really 'Southern'. I drive on pretty much every motorway in the country though (not all at the same time of course). But yeah, I was exaggerating about motorways only being free flowing at night.

I can see why you'd want an auto in town or heavy traffic, but on a motorway, to me it makes bugger all difference, since you're not generally changing gear anyway. I'll be honest, I'm not following your logic.
Motorways are boring places to be anyway, regardless of the gearbox or fuel type being burned.

Well said Craig. I currently have 2 Audis, despite not being a fan, 1 1.9 and 2.0 tdi. A6 1.9tdi (c.130bhp) SE is a great workhorse and a very nice ride. The 2.0tdi 170 A6 S Line is the biggest pile of st I have ever had the displeasure to drive. I don't know if it's the weight of the engine, the fact it's so far forward, the 19" wheels with Bridgestone plastic pretending to be tyres, the appalling, unforgiving and unforgivable suspension or just the fact that Audi no longer know how to build a car that actually drives, but it really is a piece of st. Mine also has this adaptive steering which I don't think helps. I have had it from new, thankfully will chop it in next March 26th and can't wait to see it go. I have driven loads of other cars while I've had this (18 months now) and have to say that supercars and high end sports cars don't have such a choppy ride.
Appalling ride aside, the power on the 170 lump is a very thin band and if you're on the motorway then it's perfectly acceptable, however trying to pull out of junctions is terrible. You see a gap, foot down, nothing happens, press harder, wheels spin, brake to avoid car, reverse back to line, try again. I don't have these problems in the 1.9 though, probably why I use that for every journey instead
? I've got the 140 with 19" S Line wheels and Pirelli P Zeros. The ride is very soft - I was concerned about it being a teeth chatterer as my Porsche is on 18's with pirelli P zero's and that rattles your fillings.Appalling ride aside, the power on the 170 lump is a very thin band and if you're on the motorway then it's perfectly acceptable, however trying to pull out of junctions is terrible. Having had the option of a new 5 series touring or an A4 Avant the A4 is a much nicer interior and spec for the same money and it doesn't get stuck on 5mm of snow.

st road with high volume of trucks = lots of gear changes.
I really can't see any real advantages to having a manual.

Edited to allow the use of the word "Shorpe" with a q instead of a c...
Up until a year ago I was driving the A4 Avant S line. Mine was the 140.
I had mine remapped and the immediate difference I could tell was it was way more responsive from the throttle and the power came with more punch. my only gripe was with how vacant the front end would sometimes feel and the overly regular wheelspins.
I owned mine for 3 years which for me is unheard of. I've only recently changed to a D3 Alpina which is also a 2.0 derv but with a respectable 200bhp although the Audi seemed punchier the D3 is a more of a drivers car.
I loved my little A4, it was fast, it was cheap to run and it looked good

I hope you only drive on billiard table smooth roads.
They have the most appalling ride of any modern car I've been in.

I have, and the A1M, A50, A14, to name but a few 2 lane trunk roads. Waiting behind a truck at 56 mph doesn't necessitate a gear change. Not unless you've got a car that's massively overgeared, or has very little torque in 5th gear. Alright, an auto will downshift when you boot it at 56, but that's kind of what they do.st road with high volume of trucks = lots of gear changes.

There's not really an advantage to having a manual, but there's no advantage to an auto either, which is, at least as far as I can tell, the point you're trying to make.
This is true but then I don't find changing gear a chore. It's not exactly a difficult thing to do. I know some people don't like it but I don't mind it at all. As said before, personally I dislike autos in general, but it's each to their own.
Rpm at 56, don't know. More than a 6 speed vag no doubt. It pulls strongly enough not to need a down change.
