You could pick up an older A6 estate.

Not quite under a grand but paid £1250 for a Volvo V70 2.4 petrol, MY02, 128k on clock. Have since driven 2k miles across France and another 6k with work, all in last 4 months. Everything works as it should, air con, heated seats, cruise, has full leather, etc. Just flew through MOT yesterday with no faults whatsoever. A lot of car for very little money.
I don't know much about estates but i always thought the e30 touring looks quite interesting.

I always think of trusty old Subaru estates. They seem to be pretty much indestructable, and 4WD too!
