Inspired by the "what car have you been obsessing about" thread...

How do people talk themselves into it? How long do you let yourself "mull it over"?

My current "want" is a W126 S Class Merc...

Now i certainly don't need one...i've got my Chim and work van plus access to another 3 cars which i am insured to drive....

However i still feel i need one on the drive!

Now normally i give my automotive wanting about a week and if i'm still thinking about said chariot the chances are i'll proceed.

The "practical" boxes are ticked...cheap insurance, yep, somewhere for it to live, yep, spannerable, yep.

The practical excuse i've come up with for the Merc is that i can use it as a replacement for the Tiv when the weathers poo (yes....i know i've got another 4 cars i COULD use....)

And also it can't be a bad way to invest a few quid surely? a nice old Merc? well....an old Merc...

Anyway how do other PHer's justify cars they don't need?

Mull it over? Why? If you have the wants and the means then go for it, you only live once.

I bought my Allegro about 10 minutes after seeing it.
Didn't think about insurance or reliability (obviously) until I got home.
Not a very clever way of doing it I know.

providing the bills are paid there is food in the kitchen and a roof above my head and the fact that i have no dependants my justification is quite simple. Then again for me its not just with a car its nice to book a week away or even treat SWMBO to something. providing it does not lead to debt why should you not spend your hard earned on something to make you smile

I don't need a car at all. People really don't understand why I have such a large car when I don't need it.... they find it hard to see a car as more than just a practical tool.

I've personally got three cars and there's another two on the drive.
I do about 30 miles a week. I don't realistically need a car at all but it didn't stop me lashing out loads on a nice 129 Merc and then another three grand fixing "niggles" and it still does 30 miles a week ..... on a good week. On a bad week it does 0 miles and I feel bad about neglecting it.

Buy the 126, brilliant barges and an all time luxury "great".

My commute is currently a 90 mile round trip on some very rural, mostly untreated roads. I have the perfect car for a mixture of pace, surefootedness, reasonable economy and reliability in my A5 3.0TDi quattro. I honestly can't fault it at all. I am, however, bored and keep coming back to the idea of a 996 C4S.

I know it won't match my old 993 for character, but it will at least have some and I'll be back in a 911. I know the fuel economy will hit hard and that it will, no doubt, throw it's IMS, all the bores will go oval and it'll melt on my second week of commuting. I know that despite the 4WD it'll be a pig to hustle along on the black ice that 50% of my commute will be on for 3 upcoming months.

....but I *want* one. I've had a terrible fortnight of internal turmoil with "sense" winning on a number of occasions and yet, as if almost by instinct, I find myself trawling the classifieds daily. <sigh>

I hate to think what they'd say if you had a truly large car.

Well yes I'd love a 7, the 5 is arguably quite a big car though!

Look at car, decide I want it.

Then spend weeks coming up with reasons not to buy it, but still want it.

If it's still for sale buy it.

Then think about practicality, insurance, reliability and where the hell I'll keep it.

Didn't need to talk myself into it as I knew I wanted a sports car to replace the TVR S1, the question was what, that took the time.

"mull it over" time was three weeks. Seen, sat in (see if I would fit), week later drive cloud9, week later purchase. The colour is growing on me getmecoat

Only live once! Although I haven't bought anything exciting I spent months pratting about worrying about whether I could afford it and in the end just thought sod it and bought the one nearest to my work in my lunch break.
