More and more im finind motorfactors to be very expensive, a few times a day the cost price on a pattern part is more then the retail of the OE franchise parts we stock.
^^^^^ This

Main dealer prices are often very competitive for routine service items like discs, pads, filters, batteries etc. Especially when you take into account OE quality assurance.

Usually it's parts like interior or exterior trim which turn out to be expensive, mainly because the pattern part people can't afford to tool up for the low volumes and shops don't want to stock slow moving items. For instance, £26 for a plastic interior door handle...
Oddly enough I was surprised to find the OE Renault Aux belt & Tensioner kit for the Clio 172 is substantially less from the dealer than a pattern part....

Obviously didn't get it from them, but when I was 17, I was quoted £550 to replace a handbrake cable on a Fiat Panda (neither me or dad had the time to do it ourselves, until we got that quote), so we found time, got it from my mate who worked at a car parts place for £12, dad taught me how to fix it, and his labour charge was a packet of biscuits and a cup of tea.

My mate had the door mirrors stolen from his X5, they're oil filled

£1,500 each side from BMW, hence why they go walking
You've never heard of the "M" tax then? BMW take great pleasure in sticking about a 50% markup on any part for an "M" car frown
There's no M in X5 3.0 D wink

Still, his insurance paid out.
Oil filled? WTF? And 3 grand for a pair? Scary

I paid 2 grand for some nice Recaro front seats, black leather with cloth inserts and Recaro in red writing, they were fantastic, I just had to have them, problem was they were fitted to a Rover 800 biggrin

Only time I ever bought a car based on seat based lust.

£76 for a head gasket. This was for a 24v Senator back in 1996.

10 years ago, i needed a sump gasket for my MK2 Golf GTI.

It was a main deal only part, it cost me £50, the new pan to go with it from a motor factor was only £20

What possible reason is there to spend a grand on wheel bolts, even on a Ferrari ?

They are what the factory fit to the particular wheels that my car had.

Thankfully didn't need to buy one in the end, but Honda wanted over £350 - before VAT! - for a radiator for my bike. It's half the size of the one in my car but more than 3 times the price? eek

Hello Mr Walkinshaw. I've cracked the front bumper on my XJR-15 in the last race. It's just a bit of fibreglass, how much for a new one?
"That'll be £44,000 to you, sir."

Story from the guy that did the insurance on some of the cars in the race series.

£15,000 for a new kidney, from some kid in Turkey.
Got a rare blood group unfortunately. If I'd been O positive, could have got one for about £3K.

seems almost reasonable looking at some of these!
