Have been looking for a diesel commuter and the maestro has cropped up. With the distance I'm covering does anyone have any experience of the typical MPG? My route is about 95% dual carriageway so can sit at a steady 65mph to achieve optimum if necessary.

There's 3 on ebay! I'm working for perkins so seems right to get a perkins engined car! Open to other suggestions, 120 miles per day so needs to be very frugal. I'm only a young un though so don't mind something small and uncomfortable like an AX

I think the ol Perkins engine was good for near 60mpg.

You can still buy them new if you go to the right Rover dealer.

My 213S makes over 40 mpg. Dads old Montego Countryman estate would average over 30mph easilly making over 40 on a run.

Maestros are getting rare now so you won't lose any money from owning one. It may even go up in value now this recession's about to become a depression.

I don't know what they'll do to the gallon but the Diesel engines in the Maestro and Montego were excellent in their day. Plenty of torque and decent performance. They were also very smooth however perhaps a touch noisy compared to the (class leading in the day) Peugeot Citroen 1.9/1.7td.

However much I can sell a 205 1.9 Gti for. Although looking to spend around 500 quid for something small and simple. I'm very handy with the spanners so something I can fix and keep going for literally as cheap as possible.

The mx5 is not liking the high mileage!!

They do 60+mpg - most people slag off BL cars - the maestro really was a pretty decent car - they had excellent road manners, handled really well, were very spacious and had a decent interior - rust was it's biggest problem
Don't rule out the 1.3 petrol maestro - bullet proof a series engine, and remember, the maestro 1.3 HLE would manage around 70mpg on the extra urban - a figure many modern cars aspire to and fail to achieve

The 1.3's performance is also realistically quite similar to the turbo diesel too. Highly tuneable too!

The perkins is a tough unit and one of the earliest to bring direct injection to regular cars - don't expect any refinement - your neighbours will hate you on cold mornings!

Do you really want to be sitting in a Maestro for 60 miles each way to work though? Surely there must be a better alternative, something like a Pug 306 Diesel perhaps?

My Rover's always for sale-ish.

It would be nice if it goes to a good home. Have my eye on an another Alfa. So £400-ish would do it.

That post was brought to you by Jack Daniels. silly

The parents had one in the early 90s, I can't help but think a diesel one would be an utter turd of a car, surely you can find SOMETHING that is better?

Just do it in the 205. At 65mph you'll get 40mpg, assuming everything is standard...

Have we gone back in time? Why would anyone want a Maestro when you can have 10y/o Mondeo for a few hundred notes?
