I understand the hardtop SLS because of the gullwing doors being its USP, but as a convertible?

Whats the difference between this and an SL? confused

Eh? Everything I've read says the Roadster handles better than the coupe.

Don't see the point of this over an SL63. Yes its prettier, louder and more dynamic but the SL63 is pretty, loud, and as for dynamics if you truly cared you'd buy the coupe SLS anyway, or a 458 or 12C.

As for the golf bag, thats only for fat poseur Yanks. Not that supercar owners here don't play golf, but surely it doesn't take precedence over the engine, brakes and handling!
Have you ever driven an SL63 AMG?

It's a wafting great big ugly barge. Terrible steering, awful cabin with nasty switchgear, rubbish gearbox, it feels fat and lardy. It has a sublime engine - one of the best naturally aspirated engines ever built. But it's the automotive equivalent of BOBFOC - body off baywatch, face off crimewatch.

The SLS retains the wonderful engine, uprates it, replaces the crappy gearbox and has gullwing doors. Way cooler!

And has a completely different, vastly better chassis and suspension setup.

Seems like a great bit of kit
Not sure why they are comparing it to the heavier Aston Martin V12 DBS Volante when the V8 Vantage S Roadster is fairer (and cheaper wink )

Well - the chassis in the SL63 AMG is made of cheese so I would expect that the SLS would be improved.

Didnt Chris Harris really rate the SL63 he had on long term loan?

No idea. I'd happily argue that it's the worst car I've ever driven. Sublime engine, let down by everything else.

I've seen the sls a few times including in a merc showroom, the engine is no doubt incredible,

however I thinks the looks (exterior) and also interior quality is very average when compared to the likes of Pagani, i just don't think it's enough of a step-up from the rest of the amg series (i.e sl63)

proof of this will be the enormous depreciation

Just been to have a drive of one - invited to an AMG event at the Hilton Tower in Manchester.

Looks - fking stunning. I didn't think it had kept the hard-top good looks, but the tweaks (including it seems to the front end) REALLY work - it looked fabulous. This one was dark gunmetal with dark red roof and black wheels. Sounds hideous, looks fantastic.

The drive - only had 10 mins but bloody hell, what a car. As easy around town as my GT (just visability to get used to), but get it to a bit of clear road and f*ck me it shifts, but just effortless. I know auto is uncool, especially for a 600bhp supercar, but it suits this car SO much.

Conveniently, i'd have to sell either my wife or my child to afford one - but it couldn't carry a third person anyway.

I saw an orange gullwing in the Champs Elysee Mercedes showroom last week.

Not entirely sold on the colour, but the SLS gullwing is an imposing car which, if I had the money, I think I would seriously contemplate (And I have an almost pathological hatred for everything Mercedes usually).

Unfortunately, for me, without the doors it's just another Mercedes boat droptop...

PS And WHITE with BLACK wheels? Does anything say "Footballer" more clearly? biggrin

Is that a joke or are you seriously comparing a £170k car to one costing 5x that?

Ooh I dunno, that colour combo would really work well in Southern California/Miami... And they certainly would associate 'soccer players' with that look!

SL65 AMG....

So - massive torque but if the chassis is like an SL63 AMG you will not be able to put it down on the road. And a nasty cabin. And no folding roof.

But apart from that....

You seem to really dislike the SL63AMG, don't take this the wrong way, but was yours a bit of a turkey, or are all SL63 AMGs as bad as you say?

It was beautifully put together and has an awesome, wonderful, superb engine.

It was not a turkey in the sense of things going wrong (apart from the cooling system - which is a recurrent fault in all of them - so I am told). It's just a big fat barge. My normal car is an Aston Martin Vantage V12 so I have a high degree of expectation. I was driven into and had the Merc as a courtesy car. Did 700 or so miles over different roads and just don't see the point of it. It's too barge like to be a sports car and too thirsty for GT use and the cabin is too cheap and nasty for a GT.

The SL65 AMG I just cannot imagine as being worth driving - it's got bonkers sledgehammer torque when on boost due to a bloody great big twin turbo V12. But the chassis is - unless fundamentally reengineered - will just not be able to handle the power.
