I think one of the reasons the Caterham 7 remains so popular is that modern cars are retreating from what it does at a stellar rate. As it gets older, it's benefits are magnified instead of diminished smile
That's because what people want from an everyday road car differs enormously from what someone focused on racing around on a track (or on a road, pretending it's a track) does.

Not exactly rocket science...

I'm not sure we'll see decent power to weight again in small (205ish sized) cars unless the regulations change. Look at the new Ka compared to the old one. Pretty crazy that a Twingo weighs about the same as my Puma.

I was behind a C1 today and thinking it's a shame there isn't a breathed on version of it
I have spoken to a few PSA tuners, all of whom have told me it's a non starter. The packaging is so tight that there's no room for improvement. I still refuse to believe that. Sounds like one of those DIY projects...

I love how people manage to be patronising and massively wrong at the same time.

You make it sound like there's only 2 possible modes of transport - boring, safety-concious, comfortable 'road' cars and 'track monsters'??

If that's the case (and it's clear, even to my pet spaniel, that it's not) then what is the purpose of the endless 'hot' versions of cars - some of which we've even been discussing here??

My point was that the reason the 7 gains in popularity is that it's ethos remains valid and yet almost no other car shares it. Manufacturers are turning to power as a solution to weight - instead of turning to weight as a means to reduce the need for power.

When I read that the Twingo 'RS' (Trade Descriptions Act!!) weighs over 1150kgs, I spat my cereal out - is it made from lead!? Being French, we know everything is under-engineering to snap and rattle so what the hell is going on in there!? smile

I've never seen under the bonnet of one, but I can imagine it's probably pretty tight.

I think the Japs got a turbo Yaris. Never seen one though

106 Rallye fabulous minimalist sports at it absolute best.
No modern car can ever come close due to all the weight (safety equipment etc).
A true classic.
Fabulous Handling.
The biggest smiles with every drive.

A pity nothing will ever match a 106 Rallye,

all we can look forward to is stodge and more stodge !
I share your biased opinion on this.

But having never owned a 1.9 205 GTi, I'm not sure the Rallye is unrivalled.

I drive a haynes roadster, (rip off of above basically) a classic mini and got the wife an ignis sport. She has absolutely no idea how to get the best out of it and complains its noisy and rattly, and slow, no dear that will be your driving style and the fact you have been driving six years and mollycoddled on modern cars, she pretty much cacks her pants when I drive it as designed and ring its neck, sad sign of the times. Definatelgh want a 106 rallye before they go up in value too much or are all molested, sorry modded.
