So, after previously swearing blind that I would hold fire on any more spur of the moment car purchases I switched the lap top on this morning and sipped my morning cup of tea. Piston Heads seemed a little slow, so after a while I clicked on favourites and had a little browse on Auto Trader.

At 2pm this afternoon I headed back from a local car dealer having purchased a Mazda MX5

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...

A tidy little V plater with full service history and hard top. Needs some cosmetic attention, but drives really nicely - should be a good little cold weather toy whilst the Tuscan has its 'quiet time' over the winter. I've always had a fancy for an MX5, but today was the first time that I had actually driven one. What a hoot!

Anyway, having had no intention of even looking at Auto Trader this morning I have (yet again) given into the 'car thing' and made an impulse purchase.

So, are there any other PH'ers who have acted on impulse and bought a car that they had no intention of buying on the same day? My latest folly took less than 2 hours. Post your stories up and pictures of the car you bought.

I'd been in the market for a 320d so searched a few out and made some view appointments for the weekend in question. I viewed them all, some ok, some dogs. I then decided that a 330d might be more fun, so sat in McD with the Wife I hit Autotrader on my iPhone, located a 330d which was a couple of hours away. Viewed it and put a deposit down that afternoon.

Not quite as spur of the moment as you, but I did find the car on my phone and bought it 2hrs later.

Good skills.

I am the complete opposite. Research, research, and more research, and never actually buy anything frown

Bought my 2 cars 4.5 years ago and 7 years ago respectively...

PS - get an early night tonight, alarm set for 6am, top down and drive the wheels off it tomorrow morning!

I do the research, research and look at loads then eventually buy one. Hopefully one in the best condition...

That was written a couple of years ago!

Currently:

Saab at bodyshop having new rear arches welded in due to rust. Clutch has just started slipping again!
Puma running OK but rear arch started bubbling again and occasionally dumping water in passenger footwell (a/c drain tube clogged I think)
MX-5 has creaking wishbone bush and a dent wing that I am trying to source a replacement for on ebay. Recently had new clutch flexi hose after it sprang a leak and left me with no clutch!

Trying to buy a new car currently - mint example seen (in the dark!) last Sunday but with a Nikasil engine so have passed, contacted another seller 2 days ago and no response yet...

Good buy, it looks really nice!

I know exactly what you mean - a quick general browse on PH has led me into buying many a car, before you know it you've made a phone call and had a chat about the car and on the road to view it. All good fun though!

I wouldn't describe it as described in the advert - there is a nasty scratch on the rear wing which ain't going to polish out - but part of the fun of buying cars at this level is getting em straight again before moving them on.

Have to admit to having a wobble this afternoon. A good clean with the power spray on maximum led to rear sill disintergration and a subsequent prod around with a screw driver revealed a world of pain. Years of grime evidently hides a multitude of sins. Looks like I have a bit of a challenge on my hands, but a good drive with the roof down put a big smile on my face and anyway, I fancy getting stuck into some proper work.

The only issue - I was sliding the little MX5 around corners quicker than the Tuscan......

They reckon there are only 2 types of early MX5s out there, ones that have had the sills done and ones that need them doing. I bought the latter too, less than £200 got them sorted to a1 standard.

It would be much appreciated if you could let me know the details of where you had your sills replaced? There is a hell of a lot of work to do otherwise, and for £200 it's not exactly a lot of money to get the car into good order.

I've been trying to impulse buy stuff for the last few days, but I keep being thwarted by uncommunicative sellers. I've become so desperate I actually bid on a mk4 Escort estate in the dying seconds of the ebay auction! (thankfully outbid smile)

Sills are OK on my used and abused 94 Eunos (imported on 98 so been on salty UK roads a while and never garaged).
