330 too much to insure?

I'd have expected either of those hot hatches to be more, given the demographic that tend to buy them.

just wish the tax and insurance wasnt so bad

The Astra isn't as bad as Dab of Oppo weekly makes out, I'd have the Mazda 3 MPS over both though.

I don't know about the insurance, but the difference in tax is equal to a couple of tanks of petrol a year. Not something worth worrying about when none of the cars are particularly economic.

How old are you and what sort of prices were you getting?

I'm 22, 2 years NCB and I was about £960 with Admiral on a 330Ci Sport (with both parents on the policy I save about £200).

I'd take the Astra VXR. It's a very underrated car imo, spoiled by too many Clarksonisms! Yes it torque steers if you try and use full boost with too much steering lock, but that happens to all turbo FWD cars, the Astra is a bit of a handful but I get a sense that the designers wanted it to be a bit lairy and wild compared to some of the turbo powered sofas we are seeing on that hatch market today.

Horses for courses really, the ST has a better engine noise, the Astra looks better. The ST has more toys, the Astra has the best seats of any car I've sat, bar aftermarket Buddyclub items. Both have tuning potential, the ST has a lot of support, though I have not read into the Astra I'm sure there are a lot of well known (in owner's circles) options. A few VXR owners I know claim 28-30mpg, the ST owners I know are not so optimistic, the 5 cylinder really drinks and any power upgrades won't help. Having had a few rides in both, the Astra feels quicker to me too, it's less damped, it feels stiffer and raw. It's a terrific overtaking car, line it up, foot in and let it rip! The Sport button in the Astra is duff though, it does firm the suspension up but according to EVO it also alters the throttle map and gives you wider throttle openings over less of the pedal's travel, though none of the blokes that I know who own VXR's claim much, if any difference in throttle, and they all just leave it in sport mode as standard.

A word though, if you go VXR, save the money and get the Remus exhaust system, or a decent custom built system with a deleted centre silencer and minimal muffling on the backbox, and get them to weld the original tip back on (looks better than the Remus one imo), those VXRs sound pretty mental when you unleash them with a good, free flowing exhaust system!

It would be the ST for me, I couldn't seem to find a comfortable driving position in the VXR. I do prefer the astra looks though.
