Sorry to avoid the 2 mentioned but the Mk5 Golf GTi is my choice.

A £200 remap would take it to VXR/ST power. Plus you have a better looking car which will hold it's money better.

An Edition 30 Golf with a remap and a few bolt on parts will crack 300bhp no problem.

The 2.0 TFSi engine is brilliant!

I have owned an astra vxr and the missus has an ST. As a comparison I absolutely love the look of the vxr, Especially in Arden blue with the 19" wheels. However decent rubber in vxr size was expnsive iirc around £190-£210 for p zeros. Although vredstein sessantas are meant to be great on the astra and are alot cheaper. ( ST comes with 18's.)Compared to the ST which unless in orange or White, IMO looks fairly bland.

My astra was an 06 so fairly simple in terms of equipment, whereas the ST of a similar age has xenons, better stereo etc. Although the later vxr's are pretty well specced.

In standard guise the vxr is definately less refined than the ST. If you buried the throttle mine used to attempt to throw you into on coming traffic or the nearest kerb. The ST however is much better and the revo knuckle technology does a fantastic job of keeping you in a straight line.

The vxr had half the mileage of our ST and the ST has definately worn better in terms of interior etc. Because of large bolsters in the vxr the drivers seat can look quite tatty.

The soundtrack from the 5cyl is significantly better even as standard. But I do find the ST is thirstier. I used to avg 24 mpg around town whereas the ST is between 19-22mpg.

Overall If I was buying them again, I would go for the ST. It is much more refined, comfortable, effortlessly fast and seemingly much better put together.

Also consider that the vxr has a tendency to lunch gearboxes!!

Get yourself over to www.vxronline.co.uk or www.stoc.com do your research and make your choice.

Any other questions feel free to ask.

New or used? If new, contact Vauxhall Customer Services.

If used, buy the Focus ST, it's brilliant!
It's such a surreal car, like a really good car has been hidden under a Focus shell. It's fast, it handles well, it sounds fantastic, it's got great seats, it's practical, it does it all.

The only downside is that it's thirsty.

My 2p worth.

I test drove both and found the ST to be more comfortable, sounded better, IMHO handled better, again IMHO looked better (in Electric Orange ) and felt like more car for the money.

Treated myself to the Graham Goode conversion which resulted in over 300 horses, and fitted decent shocks (which not only make it look better but help the handling alot).

This made it the car it should have been from Ford more than quick enough for anything day to day, Overtaking power was immense (plenty of Torque), TLGP's it held its own against quite alot of "superior" cars.

Travelled to Cornwall and Scotland a few times and never had a sore back or any other issues.

MPG it was quite a thirsty thing Average was around 25 but could easily drop with a bit of right foot.

I have an embarrassingly heavy right foot, I seem to manage 26-27mpg average. You can see 30mpg if you drive like a granny, but the engine note really encourages you (or at least me!) to press on. I don't know what real world figures are like for the VXR.

Left field hot hatch suggestion (my first choice would probably be the 3 MPS), how about the Volvo C30 with the T5 engine? Same engine as the ST but much more of the sleeper look.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3053319.htm

Never driven one, spec looks pretty good one it.

Deano almost everyone has pointed you into the Focus yet you still sit and say' i like the looks of the vxr'. I think that answers your question really. You are going to buy on looks and that is pretty clear. Stop fretting about it and buy the VXR. If you buy the focus you will love it but I think you will wish you had a VXR everytime you look at it. If you go and buy the VXR you wont wish you had the ST.

IMO id take the Focus every day of the week but its clear what your heart wants. Anyone else agree?

Interesting but ultimately pointless thread.

OP isn't and wasn't going to buy the ST however many people tell him it's the better car.

Go buy & enjoy the VXR mate - you dont want anything else.

Spend the same on the vxr or st and have 260+hp. No brainer.
