On an ST ???
I thought so. But could be very very wrong.
I'm about 99.999% you are - RS only.

It's such a surreal car, like a really good car has been hidden under a Focus shell. It's fast, it handles well, it sounds fantastic, it's got great seats, it's practical, it does it all.

The only downside is that it's thirsty.
The thirst can be overstated, depends on mileage, type of roads, whether you can drive with some intelligence & so on. I can get above 25 average & really don't hang around (where appropriate wink ).
Is it worth the odd MPG for the soundtrack? I thought so and still do.

I daresay that the ST will be more reliable as well - until very recently line's been excellent (95k up) and even now, the issues could easily fall under wear & tear. Exterior now looks a little shabby but the interior is fine & that Volvo engine is a lump of low tune pig iron, which is a good thing as it will consequently be good for 200k+. One chap on here had one for 125k without issue.

Thing is, having said all that, it would seem that you want to be told to buy the Astra, so do it. I wouldn't (and didn't), but each to their own. I'd say buy the ST or look at a 130i - Billy bargain when you can pick up a facelift car for 13k.

I had a similar dilemma a couple of months ago. Considered a VXR and an ST amongst loads of other stuff. The Astra looks good I have to say, but then so does an ST if it's in the right colour (ie electric orange smile).

The Astra is a decent enough car but it is the law that performance (FWD) Vauxhalls must torque steer and understeer at every available opportunity. This is how it has always been.

I bought a focus, it's a great car. Tons of torque (if a bit lazy on the engine front but easily sorted with a re-map if that's your thing), and quick where it matters; ie in the mid-range. Seats are very comfy even if you do seem to sit on the car rather than in it. Relibility and build quality seem pretty good according to focus st owners.com (aside from some relatively minor issues; show me a car that doesn't have issues).

The Focus will drive better than the Astra. Get an orange one and a fake tan to blend in biggrin
