I thought about posting that but the "tank" merlin is actually called a meteor, and the noise I associate with a merlin comes from a pair of superchargers as well as the rest of the engine (the superchargers never made it into the meteor since they were for altitude performance).

Biased, but the old man has a Jag 5.3 HE in a Dax Cobra. It sounds excellent, in an old school British engineering kind of way, very different to these highly strung Italian engines.

For me it's either the Ferrari 250LM or Mclaren F1. I can't get You Tube at work, but there's a fantastic video out there of the 250LM made by Ferrari. Someone may have posted it already?

I heard an f50 for the first time yesterday. The noise was absolutely fantastic. Not only the quality of the noise but the speed the revs rise and dropped helped it even more. Of all the v12's mentioned in this thread, most are road car engines with good exhausts. The f50 is formula 1 engined modified for the road. Awesome!!
