I'm selling a car. It's a Vauxhall Astra of 2001 vintage. The car isn't roadworthy as the brakes are beyond knackered (needs new rear calipers, discs and pads all-round) and the car is in a tatty condition.

It's advertised in various places, but I've had an email tonight asking if I'd take £500 cash for it (£100 through paypal as deposit). This sounds quite agreeable to me, but the guy is from Buckinghamshire and I'm from Humberside.

Why would you travel across the country to buy a non-runner Astra? Reckons he's going to get it recovered home with breakdown cover - but the car isn't taxed or insured. I'm sure they wouldn't do it.

I've got a mobile number to ring and have spoken to the guy. Sounds young, naive, but probably good intentioned?

Sorry, what is the problem?

He turns up, gives you money, you give him a receipt (which you also sign and keep a copy of) and away he goes.

You are right, I cannot see it working either but I would also take the money.

The car drives right? As in moves off the driveway? Just tell him to take it to the pub down the road and watch him drive off.

Print a couple of those off one for you and one for him, and get him to sign both.

Don't take the deposit from paypal. Just get all the money in cash. If he paypals you cash, without proof you 'sent' the car, he could try a claim to get cash back. Just tell him if he turns up first with cash, its his.

He suggested this on the phone, just now, so that's ok.

Only thing is I can't find the MOT cert. I suppose he can check it online though.

Starting to get bad feelings about this.

Car is washed, looking clean and tidy outside. It's got £5 of diesel in it, and ready to go.

Spoke to the guy yesterday, said he was going to call back at 8ish when he'd spoken to his mate with the recovery truck. Never called. I tried calling a couple of times, but no answer.

Going to try calling him this morning, from a different number, see if I get any joy.

Private sale goes wrong because after much positive conversations the Buyer/Seller (delete as applicable) goes AWOL.

Get used it I'm afriad, part and parcel of the the private sale.

There is a reason for it being potentially more profitable than using the trade and this is basically it - hassle.

It's just annoying that he was so definite he wanted the car, and pushed me quite hard to accept his offer and pull the listing from eBay.

I know. Just chalk it up. I'm sure that next time you may be more inclined to 'do the deal' when the Buyer is on your doorstep with the money. Until that point, it's 'For Sale'. This approach soon sorts the wheat from the chaff.

This.

I recently sold a car and the buyer (who did eventually turn up with the money) didn't leave a deposit. Until I had the money in my hand, I would have gladly sold it to someone else and told him unlucky bud.

Is £500 significantly more than a webuyanycar or similar valuation or even scrap weight? Much less hassle surely for that kind of money... just a thought.

WBAC offered me £30 :P

Scrap men around here don't even want to know, if it can't be driven to them.
