Graebob - what was the outcome of the Boy Racer Saloons article?

Good luck! wink

I looked for a decent runner a few years back and the odd one that did come up wasn't much cheaper and not as good nick as that
Fair enough, makes it a rare beast.

Great car!

But... £8k?! rofl
Is it any more unrealistic than a RS2000?

I heard someone paid millions for some old Italian car as well......
As I said; great car - I love it. However, I don't get the price at all - just seems a little aspirational to me?

i.e. an unmolested low mileage Tommi Mak EVO VI would be a similar price - often mentioned as one of the greatest drivers cars of all time. Never seen the 2000 EX Turbo in that bracket.

But why would you want an Ford RS Turbo when you could have this?
personal choices i supose, i've always been a Ford fan, and since i was a little lad i've wanted an S1 RSTurbo.
everyone on here has their vehicle preferences, mine happens to be Fords, clearly others in this thread have a lot of time for the Lancer.

as for eveyone knowing what car you drive (if i had the S1) its just the ease of not having to repeat myself everytime someone passed it, and i'm 90% sure most (chavvy)petrol heads that grace car shows will end up saying . . . "how much did you pay!? you should have got a proper evo mate" (this i have been witness to after a mate built a full spec 4x4 rally rep out of his old basic Charisma, to have almost every other 'enthusiast' at the Mitsu meet say it, only a handfull appreciated the work/time/effort put in to the finished car)

That are comparable to the likes of the EX2000/RS2000/HS2300 etc?
Well some of the old italian stuff isn't much quicker and rarer.

The point was more that £8k isn't a lot compared to the price of some classics - I wouldn't pay millions for an old Ferrari ( even if I had it ) but some would

FWIW Mitsi-lovers also have a habit of referring to the 1st-gen Galant VR4 as the Evo 0 even thought it wasn't one either.
Allow me to get my pedant hat on for a minute. Technically the most convincing claim to the title "Evo 0" is the Lancer GSR that the original Evo (full and correct title: Lancer GSR Evolution) evolved from.
Counterpedant - the GSR (non Evo) was always a fair bit weaker and had the 1.8 4G93(IIRC) rather than the 2.0 4G63, whereas the 1st-gen VR4 did have the 4G63 and got rallied in the Grp-A days.

I've always preferred the Subaru option personally! hehe

Just had a rake in my old car files, thought I had a copy of the original dealer brochure on the Turbo, I do have the brochure for the model after that one though.

After owning a Mitisubishi Mk1 Sapporo from 1983 till 1989 and done 200K, I was fed up of balancing the silent shafts in the engine, I nearly bought a 2000 Turbo from a garage in Kent, they wanted £3250 for it back then, and it had 23,000mls on clock, good nick plus went like a rocket.
Nice though it was, I much prefered my Sapporo, silent shaft's and all.

That car would have to be in absolute Mint condition for £8000 though.

The coolest thing about this car is "I believe" that it was the original Mad Max police pursuit car???

Pretty cool all liveried up in the film!
Surely posted in the wrong thread - you're talking about the Ford XB Falcon methinks...

I happen to agree! I like the Ford RS's, but some of them are fetching silly money (£15k+).

This car is very very rare, less than 50k miles. I remember these things going about, they were regarded as pretty fast in their day (which they were - slightly over 1000kg and 168bhp)and still no slouch considering it's standard and 30 years old.

I like it, a lot! I don't happen to think that's quite so overpriced are some are saying. Very cool car!!

@hiltoa- woooops, my memory is clearly twisted lol........

Was it ever a film pursuit car do you know? I seem to remember the backwards writing coming up in someone's rearview mirror. Bow to your wisdom and I feel like a tt, Soooo I take it back, the 2000 is crap smile
(only joking) although I remember spanking one (driven by a local wealthy Son of) in my old MK1 Fiesta track car (it had 150bhp) that said 1.1L on the back. He was laughing absurdly showing off to a couple of girls in his car at the lights. Left him for dust so only remember the cool reversed 2000 Turbo sticker disappearing backwards.
A wonderfully irrelevant but satisfying teenage memory! I still think they looked great all in White with red stickers though!

The RS might be cheaper, but I woulden't go near it:

suspension has been lowered and uprated
the car is running 18 psi of boost but will run a lot more

Plus the painfull to read advert from a dealer, which is always a worry...

I remember these well for one good reason - at the age of 65 my Grandfather bought one.

He'd always bought British until a Rover P6 proved the last straw and he converted to a Colt (as Mitsubishi where then called) Sigma, one day he happened to be visiting the showroom and instead of buying a pickup which is what he went out for, he ended up buying one of these - for what reason I'm still clueless, he was never a Petrolhead.

He was a farmer and I enjoyed many journeys up and down the farm track with my dad flooring the accelerator and waiting for the kick in the back when the turbo's spooled up. I also loved the reverse lettering on the spoiler.

As nice as it was he didn't have it long before swapping it for a Colt Sapporo, again much loved by me/my brother as this seemed to be pretty close in looks (well it was pillarless) to the Pontiac Firebird of that era.

"So really, the verdict is simple: boy racers go for the Lancer, and those who want a discreet and prestigious small saloon which is almost as fast go BMW."

I'll give it a scan later and upload it if anyone's interested smile

Here's hoping you do post the article. I had a diecast model of one of these as a kid, it had the orange graphics on it. It'd be interesting to read the review compared to the 323i.

Standing 1/4 in 15.5s - That's hugely fast for a family saloon.

Isn't modern-day 3-ish Litre Execs and hot-hatches these days only around 15s standing quarter? I just looked up current model Audi A6 3.2 FSI on Autocar and it is 16s standing quarter.
