I thought it was generally because diesels these days are usually quicker in every day driving than their petrol equivalents therefore petrol cars end up slowing diesel drivers down?
No.
Well they are generally. But thats a whole other can of worms.
Eight replies in, did it take that much time because you didn't leave it in top?

As said, stick to the servicing guidelines, don't thrash it from cold, or for the last few miles before finishing a journey, and wear gloves when filling up. Great for good torque esp for when towing. Mine is super quiet up at my cruising speeds on the m/way, can't tell it is a diesel.

I drive a diesel which isn't mine (company, lease car), its 10 months old and now on 30k miles. Its had two tyres, one service and nothing else. I fill up roughly once a week and my hands never smell of the stuff because I wear gloves.

It will keep up with any traffic, never feels that slow really and it will be better to drive than its petrol equivalent.

You mustn't do much filling up of diesel cars then! The greasy, oily pumps are a pain in the arse and even washing and drying your hands doesn't take all of the greasiness away.
I fill up my diesel at every week and haven't encountered any "greasy oily pumps". The handles are no dirtier than the petrol ones... they are all a bit grubby as they are somewhat exposed to the elements. So why would they be greasy or oily, unless people are dipping their hands in the fuel itself or spilling it everywhere?

And if washing and drying your hands doesn't clean them, I'd suggest you aren't doing it properly smile

If you've ever tried getting them clean with just water and a towel, you'd know it's a big ask. Something about oil and water not mixing. wink

I'd rather drive behind a petrol car though, just to avoid being stuck in the smoke cloud the oil burner leaves behind!
I've done plenty of diesel filling. Never wore gloves and never got diesel on my hands. Also never left a cloud of smoke in my wake (in fact, my current petrol-engined car is doing a great job of that at the momemt wink)

As for not wearing gloves.

Pump handles somehow for diesel are dirtied than petrol.
Maybe because labourers use diesels for vans etc ands have filthy hands touching the pumps or they spill fuel over the hole.

Petrol evaporates at normal temps hence any soil on it's handle will vanish ( still filthy though).
Diesel doesn't evaporate as quickly as petrol so would be just as filthy plus greasy due to the characteristics of the liquid.

Me too - not sure what all this nonsense is about the smell or getting your hands greasy.
