80's child, 80's cars still appeal more than most
Discussion
thinking about my yoof today, and of the cars that were about.
i was born in '70 and for me, the 80's cars still appeal, more so than anything else today and if i had the storage space and the cash to buy, i'd have quite a few tucked away. what would you have to relive your 80's early car years?
for me it would be:-
alpha sud ti in red
xr2 mk1 and 2 (mk1 in black, mk2 in white)
1985 escort rs turbo (white)
lancia delta integrale in red
golf gti mk1 1.8 campaign in mars red
golf gti mk2 in oak green
porsche 964 c2 in guards red
porsche 944 cabrio (already own)
peugeot 205 gti 1.9 in white
renault 5 turbo in blue
citroen bx gti 16v in red
audi quattro in red
bmw m3 in red
ferrari 348 in gallo fly (just in at '89)
lamborghini countach in red

I was born in 82 so that decade's cars still appeal the most. Stereos you could change, headlight bulbs that don't require the bumper to be removed when one goes, rear windows you could see out of, servicing that could be done at home..........still, thank God for progress huh?
Which reminds me, I really must buy a mk1 xr4i before the scene tax goes mental on them

I passed my test in '89 so this makes me a true (child/adult) of the '80s!

Audi Quattro - white for me though
Sierra Cosworth/3 door- white again please
Ford Capri 2.8L
Ford Fiesta 1300 Super Sport (70's I know but I wanted one bad but had to suffice with a Mk 1 XR2)

ooh yes, an astra gte in white. totally forgot those!!
nova gte another one, again in white and a fiat strada abarth in red.
white were at it, a saab 900 turbo aero in black and an opel manta gte in white.
is it just me, or is it nolstalgia, but no sporting car since, say 1992, comes close to those that were around in the eighties.

Supersports didn't come out till the end of 1980 so I'd count them as an 80s car Mk 2 (S2) Escort RS Turbo - I had one

I was born in 83 (hence the username!)
Brought up seeing Cortinas, Sierras, MK1/2 Fiestas, Montegos, Maestroes, Talbot Sunbeams, Granadas... you name it.
My choices have got to be:
BMW E28 M5 - I just like the E28 anyway
Cossie RS500 - Andy Rouse in BTCC
Granada Scorpio - once went to school in one as a taxi, the ICE was more superior to the other Granadas in the fleet
Jag XJ6 (AJ40) - just fancied one when I was a kid
Saab 900 - a next door neighbour had one but it had minilites fitted
Landie defender - I blame the old 80's catalogues
Bentley Mulsanne - same as above but to use as a show off cruiser.

Although I didn't really start to read about cars until the 1990s, I spent the 1980s looking at pictures of them. I own a Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 (in red) so that would be at the top of my list, but I would have to include parent's cars to:
Peugeot 604 SRD Turbo (1982)
Saab 9000 Turbo (1986 - my dad picked it up on, 1st August, and I spent the whole day counting each D-reg car I saw until my dad came home...)
BMW E30 320i Cabrio (1989 - one of the best cars my parents ever had. My mum cried when they sold it)
Then there is:
MB 500 SEL
Renault 11 Turbo in black (saw one in a CAR comparison test and just thought it looked great)
Renault Alpine GTA Turbo
Subaru BRAT
Porsche 944 Turbo
Rover 800 Sterling (original from launch, not the face-lifted version)
Peugeot 205 CTI
Daihatsu Charade GTti
..... to name but a few.

Passed my test in '88 and had a Mk1 Astra GTE in black for a couple of years in the 90s. Loved it but it gradually died. Ran out of petrol in it on the A14 at 2.30am on Christmas morning in 1995. It was -2C and I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt.
Mates had R5GT Turbo and RS Turbo, both of which were a lot of fun.

I'm a child of the 80s, turned 21 in 1989 ... which, if I had to choose cars from one year only, would be the year. Much unobtainium back then now affordable, sadly even more remains out of reach still.
Most of what I actually got to drive back then has dissolved! (Alfas, Lancias, 5GTT etc)

Born in 86 so too young to remember anything coming out, but I remember things like XR2/3is, RS Turbos etc. around here (Weston ) in the early 90's. Those don't hold that much appeal for me, but there are so many 80's to mid 90's cars I can look at and think why don't they make cars like that any more.
I know it's probably the "in thing" at the moment, but what I'm inextricably drawn to is 80's Jap cars, would love to have an R30 Skyline Turbo RSX or an R31 GTS Twincam Turbo and a 280Z or the later Z31 200ZR. Could spend hours "reading" the brochures and watching the hilarious ads
