I recently had a similar dilemma, opted for a Z3 M Roadster in the end. Probably doesn't tick the 'classic' box yet but will do one day!

Other cars I considered/still want to try at similar money:

Elise
Sierra Cosworth (3 dr)
968 CS
Clio V6 (phase 1)
TVR
Audi Quattro
BMW 6 Series
Mercedes SEC

£10k can get you in to a lot of car these days rotate

For a more unusual choice, if you can find one a Ginetta G33 (I liked mine). V8 power and very light, very rare, good handling, leaks in the rain smile Occasionally you see them for £10k or a bit more, £15k for an excellent one.

Alpine GTA Turbo
TVR of some description

It might be topical but i'm not an old ford fan.

If I went for a z3 it'd have to be a coupe. The roadsters are nice cars though.

I like the thought of a 968 or even a 911, i'm just not overly 'up' on my porkers. I guess it'd be a 964 model 911? Are the 968's getting more interest now?
Your more likely to get a 996 for that money. The price of good 964 are on the up, similar story with the 968 especially the club sport.

I wouldn't buy a 996 as a friend had to have new liners on a 23,000 mile old engine.

Great call, would struggle to get a CS for 10k though. Much better balance than an equivalent 911 (pre 89 or 964 at a push).
You'll want something depreciation free or even an investment. 968s do need looking after but aren't over complicated and are one of the best handling cars about - I still say my almost standard CS handles better than my e30 M3 with 10 years invested in trying to make it go, turn and stop better.

Can anyone give me a rundown on a 968 sport or CS?

I take it the 968 sport is a 2+2? Might get me some brownie points!

The coupe and sport is 2+2, the Clubsport is a ripped out version. I can't tell you enough how pleased I am with mine.
It will gladly sit at 30 in 6th but will also do almost 70 in second. It's got a better/smoother gear change than a 996 and Boxster. Quite a bit 4 cylinder and 'not a proper Porsche' sound but very quick for an almost 20 year old car. Mine is over 270bhp and shows a lot of cars up.
