Hey guys

Need some help!

I have just returned from Belfast, purchased a car with English number plates that was bought by the current owner (in Belfast) from London.

The car has a

NI V5C and NI MOT certificate valid till March 2012

I have just purchased it so all I have at the moment is the "Section 10 V5C/2(NI)" part of the V5C..

Just wondering if I can tax the car using the Section 10 V5C/2(NI), NI MOT plus the relevant insurance documents? Anyone have any experience doing this?

You have to re register the car to "UK mainland" before you can Tax it. You cannot tax a car registered in NI in Scotland, England or Wales.

Website says

Moving between Great Britain (GB) and Northern Ireland (NI) with your vehicle
You only need to fill in the change of address section on your V5C (moving from GB to NI) and send to a Driver Vehicle and Operator (DVO) office, or your V5CNI (moving from NI to GB) and send to a DVLA local office as your vehicle is staying in the UK.
When transferring the vehicle from GB to NI you should leave the current tax disc on the vehicle until it expires and then re-tax in NI. This is the same for vehicles transferring from NI to GB.
The form V561 is no longer applicable when vehicles are moving between GB and NI.

You could go back to NI and Tax it there, it would be legal to drive on all UK roads but I think you need an NI address for this.

Absolute rubbish. I beg to differ!

I have just done a very similar thing, I bought from NI, on NI plates, with NI V5, previously an English Reg car and I just took the V5 slip to the PO as normal with my insurance (no MOT required) and got it taxed at my local PO.

The lady at the PO said it made no difference that this was a DVA (NI) document.

I stand corrected.

But if you follow the link on the "direct Gov" website it states under the heading "Tax your vehicle" on the sixth line down:-

"A Northern Ireland registered vehicle can't be taxed in England, Scotland or Wales"
