A friend is looking to replace her Renault scenic. She wants something with seven seats and an S-Max is too big. She's looking at a Citroën Picasso but as it's basically the same as a Scenic which my wife had and I hated with a passion is there anything else? Ideally not French.

Defender is not really an option for town (rubbish turning circle), not for long journeys (bench seating in the back, road noise etc etc).

It's French, but the Peugeot 307 SW must be the smallest 7 seater out there.

But it is small

And very suited to town as dents merely improve it

Zafira?
VW Touran?
New 7-seat Ford C-Max
Multipla (6 seats)
Mazda 5 (6+1 seats)

The problem with these mid-size people carriers is that the rearmost seats are only fit for small kids, so if she intends keeping it a long time and using the rearmost seats, she will need to get used to a slightly bigger car and learn to park. The difference between a large and medium MPV is only about 30cm in length, (which = a standard school ruler) and all but poverty-spec will have parking sensors, so it's no big deal having a slightly larger car.

I would avoid the Volvo v70 - terrible turning circle, so not easy to manoeuvre.

If you need 7 usable seats then having the smallest kinda defeats the object doesn't it?

Mazda 5 wins this one without a doubt, compact & easy to drive & no French parts!

I've recommended the Multipla, any thoughts on how good the Mazda is?

Multipla build quality is iffy, but it will seat 6 adults and have bootspace and is very short (but a bit wide!) Mazda probably has better build quality.

Put a front basket on this:

It's really flexible as it can also double up as a removal van or even a livestock carrier and still do 80mpg.

Unless it's going to be a Defender then 'small' and '7-seater' are mutually exclusive. Plus, if I had the need for a 7 seater then there's no way I would be putting my kids in what was designed to be the boot of a small estate car.

If she's taken the decision to overbreed then sorry but she'll have to get used to having a bigger car.

Otherwise, have a look at the Qashqai +2
