106 clutch

GF was driving her 106 yesterday when she lost all gears. If engine is running you can not select any gears but if you turn the engine off then you can find them all easily?? The gearbox has always been a bit awkward, you need to really push the clutch down to select a gear etc but this came on suddenly (in the space of ten mins) I am about to go and tow the car back so I can have a proper look at it but is it the clutch?? or could there be something simple that may have broken???
