I pass threee of these give way to oncoming traffic junctions on my way to work and notice that the majority of people give an acknowledgement as I do with a thank you gesture.

I somethings this is odd, as it is actually a traffic command, but I also think it's in acknowledgement that you weren't a tt and decided that the give way isn't meant for you, causing the oncoming car to slam their brakes. This tends to happen a couple of times a month usually by some late for work moron in the morning.

So do you say 'thank you' or just go through regardless as you have right of way?

I always say thankyou, it's just general pleasantness in my opinion.

When let into traffic, I thank folk and when I let folk in, I expect to be thanked in return.

Basic courtesy, which is sadly becoming rarer and rarer.

I can't remember the last time I let someone out and didn't get thanked for it (except when when pulling to the middle lane to allow people to get onto the motorway, for some reason).

Very, very true. Far far too many people on the roads, and in general with no matters what so ever.

I always say thank you at the give way junctions, always let people in when it's sensible to do so, and give a quick hazards flash when I've been let in off a slip lane. So often I'm driving along, dual carriageway and you flash to let the person joining you've seen them and adjusted speed accordingly, yet they just join and carry on as if you were supposed to let them join.

Idiots.

I'm specifically talking about these funny little things that you find around the place.

I always thank the person who has stopped, as do most people, but a lot who don't who I imagine think it's like a traffic light, and you don't thank people for stopping at those. hehe

Oh those. That's more like thanking someone for not pulling out of a side road in front of you when you're on a main road.

I do though, coming to them in either direction.

Giving and receiving a courteous thank you gesture is now the sign of membership of the Thoughtful and Considerate Drivers Club. Quite an elite body these days it seems.

I often show my appreciation to someone who could have just pulled out on me but didn't. Sometimes they must wonder why. But I know. smile

mine was this morning, i am getting fed up with letting people into my lane, hanging back to allow them out etc and no thank you. i got so fed up the other night i flashed the guy after he was in my lane, we got to lights a bit further on and as we were beside each other he asked what was wrong, i said 'i let you in do you not say thanks?'

he said 'i never said thanks as there was just a space to pull into' my reply was that the space was there as i had not filled it with my land rover and let him merge in.

people just don't seem to think on the roads these days.

i find myself not letting people out of side roads etc these days because the last time i did it wasn't acknowledged, and that's daft. i think i am getting old smile

Do you live in London or something? Because around here, it's really nothing like that.

Actually, anyone else do that? Or am i really odd for giving people a thumbs up on the road?
If it's a bit of a geezer letting me out, I'll give a thumbs up. Otherwise I'll just raise the hand in an approriate way. Odd.

I give a thumbs up if it's to someone my age (twenties) or if I'm in my work van, as you've got to fit in with the sterotype..

hehe

I object to thanking someone for obeying the law.

I frequently find myself thanking people for not doing something stupid. It's a sad reflection on the fact that most of the time you EXPECT someone to do something stupid, and when they don't, it's a pleasant surprise.

I tend to, at first, raise my hand in thanks, and then turn this gesture in to a thumbs up. I have no idea why.

Kind of a Ted Rogers lite.

I always give thanks by raising a hand if someone leaves an opening clear for me to turn into a side road or lets me onto a main road. Likewise if I get a thank you for waiting behind a parked car and letting someone through I will thank the person who thanks me. It's just basic courtesy.

Hence the question. smile

The majority of people do give a thank you twice a day when I go past these give way things.

A pet hate of mine, manners do not cost a thing, driving up a road with cars parked on both sides, you pull into a gap to let the cars coming the other way pass... If I don't get a thank you of any of them (more and more the case these days) it enrages me completely.

Same here!

It's the little things that infuriate the most, a slight raise of the finger would suffice, but no, some people can't even do that can they? mad
