Rare sight now ....but I think for a sub 1k Ford coop I'd probably go a bit newer, better handling and have a V6 for similar cashhttps://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-FORD-PROBE-2-Ol-16...

Always thought these might have been more popular with the 200bhp quad cam version of that V6 that the MX6 got.
Would have made for a Probe with a bit more shove.
Very close to launching a 200bhp engine in the later Cougar Ben but poor sales ( for a Ford ) put paid to itWould have made for a Probe with a bit more shove.

1. ABOUT THE CAR
Interior: 7 out of 10
Exterior: 7 out 10
Drive: 8 out of 10
Service History: Yes
Suggested Retail Price: £2,999
Estimated Value In 10 Years: £10,000
Valuer's Comments: "Becoming very rare and sought after is the Ford Cougar. This is the over powered 2.5 litre V6 model with the much desired manual gearbox. t comes in gleaming silver with contrasting unmarked black leather. This is a highly spec'd Cougar so don't confuse it with the other rubbish out there.
This one is so perfect for you collection. You know that every collection needs an Ford coupe and this has to be the best one to get! Appreciating useable classic and cheapest in the UK by far. Don't be the guy who said 'I remember when these were peanuts and now they are mega money' ten years from now.
Surely there's a law against this drivel.. Interior: 7 out of 10

He says the same about all of his rag-eared motors if you look at his other sheds for sale.

Mazda had a few interesting engines in those days, there was the KJ-ZEM supercharged miller-cycle 2.3 V6 as well.
