Highly under-rated in my opinion.
Have to agree with you.My Dad ran one of these from new in '97 for 12 years and 110k (maybe one of the last off the line). Even new his was a relative bargain with a massive reduction due to the Cougar being on the way. I think it's reputation is harsh as it wasn't a bad steer and had enough power for what it was. It also had relatively bullet proof reliability, in the 12 years it went back to the dealer once under warranty for an immobiliser issue and later in life it became fond of a fuel filter. I loved the look of it new but it did date quickly, and those pop-up headlights are superb - I loved driving it at night, bit of an event as pop-ups are so rare!
Despite being in great nick, the temptation of the scrappage scheme saw to its demise (i'm sure many others suffered the same fate). But by trade in, he certainly had his money's worth for this type of coupe.
I've got very fond memories of borrowing it and hooning around at night in it with my mates shoe-horned into the back!

Am I the only person that reads 'we've only done 2k miles in it since 2004' as either 'it's st and broke immediately' or 'it's clocked'?
I did consider this a little suspicious too. If it didn't fit your needs you wouldn't hang on to it for 7 years watching it depreciate.minimatt1967 said:

I really like that!
I assume it is not the same 2.5 V6 hat I have in my ST24?
No, it's a Mazda engine.I assume it is not the same 2.5 V6 hat I have in my ST24?
see what i did there.. ha ha
I remember when these came out hoping that they'd be a true spiritual successor to the Capri. What a let down. I still quite like them though, and if it wasn't for the fact that it had been sat so long then this one would look like a real bargain.

ok so we're all in agreement the name is pants, but the actual car is a bit 'marmite' i suppose.
My dad used to own one for when they were new, and I was at school. some of my mates loved it and thought it was really cool. Some thought is was 'american' and instantly didn't like it.
I did drive it when i was about 19/20 and thought it very front heavy, and very squishy for a coupe. also the front drops away from the drivers sight so it's very hard to judge where the nose is.
However my dad got rid of it because it blew two ECU's in 6 months, and the AA man said this is very common for these cars. Also at the time he was unaware how much mazda and little ford this motor is - it's pretty much all maxda.
Oh, and there is a design fault with the handbrake mechanism sticking if used alot (e.g. heavy traffic). This is a design fault, and my dad had to manually go under the car and release the mechanism once home when this happened.
