When I smoked I was guilty of this. The answer to your question is that in my case I didnt want to use the ashtray and have a smelly car, always smoked with the window open to stop fabrics smelling, used the window for ash and butt rather than have it linger in the car.

Pretty low I know, especially when I shout at other people for littering. Needless to say I have not done it in a long time, and wont be doing it in future. Passengers now wait till they get out to smoke

Me too - and I agree with everything you say.

But I'm not a big enough to come on here and defend my actions - what's wrong is wrong!

So nothing happened, another militant anti-smoker. Watch out when they turn on one of your habits (“idiots in fast, noisy cars”).

Not against smoking, but I've had clothing damaged by discarded cigarette butts when riding my bike, and more recently one got trapped at the back of the roof on our MX5 which burnt a hole in it.

I don't see why smokers don't just use the ashtray, non smokers can still tell you were smoking in the car you know!

Sadly, the original owner of my Caterham didn't tick the "ashtray" box on the options list.

I do chuck fag-ends out of the car, but I try to be as considerate as possible; I always make sure there's a motorcyclist, TVR or tractor pulling a big load of hay behind me first.

When I was 16 and on a scooter I had a lit fag butt hit me in the visor. Good job I had it down at the time.
I had the same experience but it landed on my trousers and nearly burnt a hole. I was very annoyed but didn't give chase at 31mph.

To answer the title of you post, anyone who'll pay £6 or whatever it is for 20 bits of paper wrapped around old leaves is never going to be the sharpest tool in the box.

Indeed, most smokers I knew believed they had immunity to cancer. One by one they went and not one believed their premature, painful, costly, cancer filled death was down to the fags.

Well if you're a smoker buy one that does or don't smoke in it.

I was hit in the face when out on the bike, visor up.

Followed the van to its destination which was a big building site, gave the lad a right verbal bashing - so much so his employer came out.

He was repremanded in front of me (he was also in a works van) and the boss told me his punishment was to go around the whole building site and find all cigarette butts and bin them.

Made me feel better anyway.

What the fk is it with smokers?

Smoke in your cars if u want. But do not throw the butt out the window. It is littering.

If your don't want your car to smell of smoke then don't smoke in it.

If you don't have an ashtray then dont smoke. Or maybe chuck the butt in passenger foot well.

Smoking isnt and activity that forms part of your 'human rights' and so you can do it no matter if the facilities to support if haven't been provided to you.

No ashtray etc then don't smoke until one is available.

Stop being stupid ignorant inconsiderate low lifes.

Simples.

Shouldn't happen now, as it's illegal to smoke in a company vehicle.

Discarded cigarettes can cause car fires! They get lodged in the front grille or radiator, perhaps near to dead leaves and other dry stuff, and the air flow causes them to burn vigorously which has been known to start fires.

Oddly, everyone doesn't have a company vehicle, which means some people don't have GPS monitors/recorders/smoke alarms fitted to their Vectras/Scanias.

He's not really complaining about people smoking (stupid, filthy habit that it is, it's their choice), but some smokers' belief that it's acceptable to dump their fag ends in the road.

Still, as others have said, people who smoke are not the smartest of people...
