I had the Sapphire 4x4 Cosworth during the 90s. All true about the plastic dash and rather industrial feel but as a fun car it was responsible for many spontaneous, huge grins. When you talk to previous owners you can see their faces light up with genuine affection. Wasn’t best in class by any stretch of the imagination but you knew exactly what you were getting into, i.e., no pretentions.
Totally agree. I had a couple in the '90's as company cars I was only in my 20's- great boss!
Used to love chasing 911's. Was a true blue collar hero. People loved them. When I switched to a Beemer that was a different story!

I'd love to drive 1 and own 1 but with no driveway and no garage its unlikely to be acquired. A saph on the otherhand might be a more viable proposition.
Sadly, maybe not! Theft and security concerns were what put me off buying a Sierra 4X4 this year! frown
Not sure why, I paid £200 per annum insurance on a classic policy - shop around and you could maybe insure it for £150.

"However, I finallly made it in 2002 and bought my own one at long last. A mint 1995 petrol blue lux small turbo with only 20k miles. What a pile of total rubbish it was"

Really? I am not fan of the small turbo cosworth, but how could anyone call a 20k mint example a 'total pile of rubbish'. A cat C repaired car with wobbly suspension, a shagged gearbox and a smoky engine... yes that's rubbish?

But apart from an unrefined engine and a very basic dashboard, what exactly is so rubbish?

You have nippy acceleration, great grip, good brakes, good handling, 5 seats, amazingly good recaro's, genuine hatchback practicality, bomb roof residuals and a true motorsport bred bespoke body, assembled by karman in Germany (who did a great job apart fron the rust you get around the filler cap).

Sir I hate to call anyone a liar, but something does not sound right with your comments. Any chance of photo (with the registration) of this 'total pile of rubbish' you claim to have owned?
scratchchin

I have owned 2 sierra cosworths and the only flaws for me were reliability but both mine were not exactly standard.. i have driven many an exotic and owned a 911 carrera 4s, the cosworths were the most fun cars I have ever owned only bettered by my current fancy..

I'd like the RS2 (A LOT) but just because its an estate doesn’t mean that most people wouldn't notice the racy mirrors, big wheels, the fact that it wears a body kit, and is normally painted in a vivid shade of red or bright blue.... A dark colored late Escort Cosworth with the spoiler delete option and standard wheels would probably turn less heads..... I'd go for the RS2 though myself!
Thats why the RS2 I bought is ragussa green with plain black leather recaros, it doesn't stand out, no one notices the porsche mirrors and red brakes (they think) they come from Halfords via a red paint can and stickers !!
It is only when you open it up that they think - what was that but by then a dirty old green estate car has vanished.laugh
How do you know what other people think out of interest?

You really think it just looks like any old estate car?

Because they dont take any notice of it when it poodling around and covered in road crud, the alloys soon cake up as do the brembos.Vary rarely recognised for what it is but lads in hot wheels around Kent do jump up and down a bit when they see it.

When it is washed like yours, it soon shows its appeal again.

PS, it is a 17 year old estate car and nothing changes that - it was a vehicle in advance of its years but not now, its rarity defines its value to purists.

Not in your 20's you couldn't! Furthermore, it would be my only car, so probably ineligible for most classic policies. And I want to keep building NCB too, so classic policies are probably not going to work for that. In the end, it wasn't the insurance costs that put me off (it was fairly reasonable for what it was), it was the fact I don't have a garage to keep it in, and the fact that I'd always be worrying about it too!

A bit too council estate, signet ring and shell suit for me. Delta Itagrali EVO for me, it's a much better car.

I attended the Tempest Rally yesterday, there was a yellow Escort Cosworth taking part. It stills looks the part, and stirred memories of when I was a grubby student and a group of us from the uni motorclub went over to the woodyard in Dalby Forest to see the debut appearance of the works rally car.

The 2wd class was dominated by Escort mk2s and the technology gap in the (approx) 10yr between them and the Cossie seems greater than in the 20yrs to the latest Focus WRC.

Is that not pacifica blue?, looks too dark for imperial, i had an imperial blue cossie for a long time, didn't look like that, or it could just be the lighting I suppose.

Your right, a K plate would be the darker Pacifica Blue smile Imperial wasn't made available until the Big Turbo version was near the end of it's run so the majority of Imperial Escort Cosworth's are on the Small Turbo versions with Imperial Blue Big Turbo's being very rare smile

spot on! I saw one of the very first ever registered cossies back in 92, a ford dealer in watford had one that the son of the manager used to hoon around in and it was Pacifica blue. My brother was working there at the time and it would turn more heads than a Ferrari! Everyone and I mean everyone would stop and stare at it!

Always a fan of the looks of the Escort Cosworth but the dashboard!!!

I remember the 1st one I saw was in Farnham and I think they called it Mallard green Beautiful car. Better than my friends XR2 and ropey MK2 escorts with capri axles etc etc which we were mooching around in at the time.

One of the few instantly recognisable cars put into production and one of the best looking, I'm not saying its the best car on the road but for looks it works for me, same as an Evo6, E36 M3 all great looking cars, perfomance speed handling etc is something that i have not taken into account but jsut good looking cars.

10/10. I love the Escort Cosworth. Id gladly turn up to a client meeting in this...certainly stands out in a see of Audo, Lexus and Mercedes'...Rare to find an unfettled original though.
